“It’s a part of life, kiddo. I’m sure Dr. Liam Kind would disagree with your decision.” He winked as he stood up. “I have to get back to the books.” He walked over and kissed the top of my head. “Everything will work out the way it’s supposed to.”
My phone dinged, and when I looked down at it, I saw I had a text from Christian.
“I just left the hospital. If you’re still at the bar, I can meet you.”
“I’m just leaving. I’ll see you at home.”
I grabbed our plates and took them back to the kitchen.
“Excellent as always, Ross. Thanks. Can I get a carryout?”
“You’re welcome, Charleigh. And already done.” He handed me the bag. “Your dad said you’d want it for Christian.”
“Thanks.” I walked out of the kitchen. “See ya, Dominic.” I waved as I headed toward the door.
“Bye, Charleigh. Don’t be a stranger. We miss you around here.”
“I won’t be.” I smiled before walking out.
I walked into the house, set my purse down, and saw Christian looking in the refrigerator.
“I bring food.” I said as I held up the bag.
“Bar food?” A smile crossed his lips as he shut the refrigerator door and walked over to me.
“Burger and fries.”
“You’re an angel.” His lips swept over mine. “I’m starving.” He took the bag over to the table. “Did you eat already?”
“Yeah. I had dinner with my dad.” I sat down across from him.
“Listen, Christian, I’m sorry about last night and today. I know we need to discuss the whole having kids thing.”
“Yeah, we do, babe.” He bit into his burger. “You’re so good with kids. I know you love them because I see how you act when you’re with them. So, answer me this. You don’t want kids, or you’re afraid to get pregnant? Because that is two totally different things.”
“You already know the answer to that question. I told you last night,” I said. “God, Christian, you’re a cardiothoracic surgeon. You give people new hearts. Do you advise women to go and get pregnant?”
“I tell them to wait at least a year after their transplant. It’s been years since your transplant, Charleigh. It’s not like you just had it done.”
“And what about the anti-rejection meds I’m on? It’s not safe.”
“There are different ones that won’t harm the fetus. Honestly, I think you’re looking for any excuse you can.”
Now I was pissed because he wasn’t getting it. I pushed myself up from the table.
“Are you trying to kill me? Because if you are, we might as well call off the wedding right now!” I shouted.
“Whoa. Stop right there.” He stood up. “Why the hell would you even say that?”
“Because you, of all people, should know the risk of a heart transplant patient carrying a baby!” I shouted. “I guess having kids is more important than my life,” I said as I stormed out the sliding door and went over to Charlotte’s.
“Charleigh, what’s wrong?” Charlotte ran over to me the moment I walked in.
“Christian and I got into a fight.”
“Over what?”
“What’s going—Charleigh, what’s wrong? Did my brother upset you?” Conner walked over and hugged me.
