“What’s going on?” I ran into the room.

“I’m having contractions.”

“Did you drive yourself here?” I asked as I helped her onto the bed.

“Yes. I’ve been having them since six a.m. I thought they were just Braxton hicks. But they were getting more intense and closer together on the way to work, and my water broke, so I just drove here.”

“Did you call Georgia and Sebastian?”

“OH, GOD!” She screamed as I turned around while the nurse helped her into a gown.

“Sebastian isn’t answering. He’s in court with his brothers, and Georgia is giving a lecture at UCLA today. I tried to call, but she didn’t answer.”

“Get O.B. down here, STAT!” I said to the nurse.

“Christian, I feel like I have to push right now,” she cried.

“Emilia, I have to check you. Are you okay with that?”

“Yes. Do whatever you have to. This can’t be happening. I’m only thirty-two weeks.” Tears fell down her face. “It’s too soon. I have to push.”

“I need nurses in here now!” I shouted out the door. “Page Charleigh 911! You’re dilated to ten, Emilia.”

Two of the nurses held onto her as she pushed.

“It hurts so bad,” she screamed.

“I see the baby’s head, Emilia. I need you to push.”

“What’s—Emilia!” Charleigh ran into the room and over to her. “I got this, Kim,” she said.

“Kim, I need you to go call the NICU and tell them to get down here. Where the hell is O.B.?”

“Dr. Shane is in an emergency C-section. She said she’ll be down as soon as she can,” Rachel, the other nurse, spoke.

“Emilia, one more push.”

“You got this, Emilia.” Charleigh smiled as she helped her.

Emilia let out a scream as she pushed as hard as she could. I pulled the baby out, and soft cries came from him. I held him up while Charleigh cut the umbilical cord. I laid the tiny child on Emilia’s belly so she could see him before NICU came and took him away.

“What do we have here, Dr. Kind?” Dr. Lewis spoke to Emilia when he ran into the room. “We have to get him to the NICU now, Emilia,” he said.

“I know.” Tears streamed down her face. “As soon as we check him over and get him situated, you can visit him. Good work, Dr. Kind. I didn’t know delivering babies was your specialty.” He smirked.

“It’s my second specialty.” I smiled.

Charleigh held onto Emilia as she wouldn’t stop crying.

“It’s okay. He’s going to be okay,” Charleigh said.

“I hope so.”

“I’m going to step out into the hallway and keep trying Sebastian and Georgia,” I said.

I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed Sebastian’s number. It went straight to voicemail, so I sent him a text message.

“You need to call me ASAP!”The text wouldn’t go through, so I sent a text message to Shaun.
