“Luka?”
Fuck. Luka wasn’t used to making mistakes, but he had, because no one other than his family and Spencer had his private number. He gave Rayne the address. “They’re two bodies in the dumpster out back.”
“Consider it done. Do you need anything else?”
Luka had been a loner his entire life, never letting anyone get close. Hell, his own family didn’t know what he did for a living. They thought he traveled for some bogus job he’d made up. No one truly knew him except Spencer, who had somehow slipped past his defenses the first night he’d seen the human.
He also had to research Lazarus before he could make a move. Luka wasn’t sure if he would need Rayne to take the guy down. It all depended on how deadly Lazarus was. If the guy had a ton of security around him, that would be no problem. No one could have someone next to them twenty-four-seven.
“I’ll let you know.” Luka hung up, briefly considering changing his number, but he tucked his phone into his pocket and walked around the side of the building. Even from a block away he saw Spencer still sitting in the passenger seat, his eyes glued to the front door of the building.
Feeling devilish, Luka hid in the shadows until he was right next to the passenger side, and then he knocked on the glass.
Spencer screamed as he spun around then narrowed his eyes as he rolled the window down. “That wasn’t funny!”
“That was totally funny.” Luka chuckled.
“Not when I’ve been sitting here worried about you.” Spencer reached through the window and slapped Luka’s chest. “I’m going to pay you back for this.”
Luka slipped into the driver’s seat and started the Jeep. “I hope your retribution has us naked first.”
“What happened?” Spencer asked. “Did you have a talk with that henchman? What did he say? Do I have to pay him the two hundred every week?”
Luka knew his mate was clueless about the existence of vampires, and as much as he wanted to keep Spencer innocent, he deserved to know what happened. Knowledge was power, and the knowledge that vampires existed might keep his mate alive.
Luka told him what took place once he stepped into the building. He just wasn’t sure how his mate would react knowing Luka had had to kill again. He’d told Spencer that he was retired, and he was, but he would be damned if he let anything happen to his mate.
“Vampires,” Spencer whispered. “Just how crazy is your world?”
“Insane,” Luka said.
“If you ask me, you did the right thing.” Spencer sat back and buckled his seat belt. “They would have killed you if you hadn’t killed them. Fuck… vampires. You just blew my mind wide open.”
Luka glanced sideways at his mate. “You’re not upset I had to kill?”
“Not if it meant you living,” Spencer crossed his arms. “I’m not thrilled that you took lives, but if was you or them, I chose you.”
“I let one go.” He told Spencer about the female.
“You have honor.” Spencer gave a short nod. “I like that.”
Goddamn, the human was out to steal his heart. He was already halfway in love with the guy. “My decision might come back to bite us on the ass.”
“Then we’ll deal with it when the time comes. So, who is this Lazarus she was talking about?”
“I have no idea, but I’m going to find out.”
“Where’re we going?” Spencer looked behind them when Luka pulled away. “Why can’t I go upstairs?”
“It would be safer at my place.” Luka drove across the city. He had a modest home in the western suburbs. His neighbors had no clue what or who he was. They just thought he was Luka, the guy who kept a well-maintained lawn and didn’t really talk to anyone.
It was best to keep a low profile so his enemies never found out where he lived. Still, he had confidence in his walls and security system. He could protect his mate from any danger because, unfortunately, Spencer had been exposed to those dangers because of his uncle’s debt.
“Let’s go then.” Spencer said as he leaned back in his seat. “I’m exhausted and need my beauty sleep.”
When Luka and Spencer arrived at his house, Luka showed his mate around the two-story home. It was comfortable and sparsely decorated. He didn’t need anything more than what he already had, but now that Spencer was there, Luka wanted it to feel more cozy, more lived-in, and he wanted his mate to feel as comfortable as possible.
“Oh, this is nice,” Spencer said as he looked around. Then he wandered into the kitchen, looking over Luka’s coffee machine. “Do you mind if I make some? I said I was exhausted, but I could use a cup.”
