“We can talk about it later,” Luka said, squeezing Spencer’s hip for comfort. “Let’s just get you home so we can figure it all out.”
Spencer nodded and climbed back on the bike. With a final glance in his direction, Luka kick-started the engine, and they rode back, the eerie silence broken only by the sound of the engine and the wind.
* * * *
Spencer hadn’t wanted to come to work. He was a mess now that it was Friday. He was also still reeling from finding out he was Luka’s mate. Speaking of, Luka sat on his usual stool, watching the room, just as quiet as he’d been before they’d gone to the cabin.
Only this time Spencer wasn’t wondering about the mysterious guy. He’d gotten to know Luka, and his feelings for his wolf were only growing stronger. Also, even though Luka was an assassin, Spencer still couldn’t help but worry about tonight. What if that goon brought backup? He shouldn’t since he would think only Spencer was at home, but tonight still made Spencer crazy nervous.
He was downright terrified, actually.
“I see you’ve given up on talking to your crush,” Tanner said from beside him. “Did you find out he was married or something equally horrendous?”
“You think marriage is horrendous?” Spencer asked.
“The worst thing you could commit to, if you ask me.” Tanner poured a mug of beer from the tap. “I love having no one to answer to, coming and going as I please, and not having to account for where my money goes.” He pushed the tap handle back to cut off the flow of beer. “And not having to have sex when you don’t want to. I see why women invented the excuse of a headache.”
“You’re the ultimate headache,” Spencer mumbled.
Tanner chuckled. “I’m the ultimate migraine when someone pisses me off.”
The guy had his moments, and Spencer would rather work with his other coworkers, but Tanner wasn’t so bad. A real jerk at times, but didn’t everyone have those moments?
“You should lay the cards on the table,” Tanner said in a low voice. “Tell your crush you want to suck his dick. I bet that gets a reaction out of him.”
“You don’t think he’d sock me in the jaw for saying that?”
“If he does, I’ll break a bottle and cut his ass,” Tanner said with a little too much attitude. The guy meant it.
“Okay. I’ll give it a try.” Spencer hid his smile as he walked over to Luka.
“I heard every word,” Luka said under his breath so only Spencer could hear. “Care to go somewhere private?”
Spencer looked over his shoulder and saw how Tanner was watching them. He turned back to Luka. “My boss’s office is never occupied this late at night. Let’s go.”
When Luka stood, Spencer looked back over his shoulder. Tanner still had his eyes glued to them. “Taking a break. Be right back.” He slipped from behind the bar and had to swallow his laugh when Tanner’s eyes rounded.
If only the guy knew how Spencer had spent his night. Tanner would flip his wig.
“Spencer, hold up,” Tanner called out. He snatched Spencer aside, and both of them looked at Luka when he gave a low, menacing growl.
“You can’t really be doing this,” Tanner said with a hiss. “I was just joking. You don’t know him. What if I’m right and he has a wifey at home?”
Spencer looked at Luka. “Are you married?”
“No.”
“See?” Spencer said.
“He could be lying,” Tanner huffed. “You can’t trust a gorgeous guy. He’s way out of your league. He’s just looking to get a wet dick.”
It dawned on Spencer that Tanner had been burned before, maybe by a married guy, and now he looked at every guy like a cheater. He patted Tanner’s hand. “We’ll talk about your heartbreak when I get back.”
“What heartbreak?” Tanner let his hand fall away. “I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
Poor guy. Now Spencer saw why his coworker was a bit catty. He walked to the office, Luka trailing behind him.
“Do I need to make him disappear?”
