What good that would do? If the broker showed before Luka got there, there wasn’t a damn thing Tanner could do. Spencer watched as Tanner slipped from the room. Now it was a matter of seeing who got to Spencer first, his mate or the broker.

Just as he thought he had a moment to breathe, the door flew open and in walked Ross. He pinned Spencer against the wall, and Spencer shouted for Ross to let him go. Then Spencer felt a pinch in his neck.

“Just a little something to help things go smoothly.” Ross grabbed Spencer when Spencer’s legs gave out. “When you wake up, you’ll be Lazarus’s problem.”

Chapter Ten

Luka didn’t bother with stealth when he arrived. He pulled out the two Glocks he always kept in his saddle bag and stormed through the front door, firing at anything that moved. When one guy shifted and tried to attack, Luka put a bullet right through his head.

“Where’s Spencer?” Luka snarled.

“He’s already gone.”

Luka turned and saw Tanner sitting in a corner, his eye red and swollen, his lip cracked and bleeding. There were unshed tears in his eyes as he looked from Luka to a guy sitting right next to him.

The guy snarled and raised his hand as if to backslap Tanner. “I told you your mouth is too fucking big!”

Luka put a bullet in the son of a bitch.

“You’re Spencer’s crush,” Tanner said as he quickly moved away from the slumped body. “By the way, thank you for ending my terror. He was an asshole who deserved what he just got.” He turned his gaze on Luka. “I tried to stop them from taking Spencer, and I got a cracked face for my efforts.”

“Where’s Ross?”

“I don’t know,” Tanner said. “He left right after Spencer was taken.”

Luka felt as if his world was imploding. He’d been too late. Spencer was already on his way to Lazarus. “Find better friends to hang out with,” he snarled at Tanner before turning on his heel and walking out.

If it had been up to him, Luka would have killed Tanner just for being there, but Spencer had asked him not to, so Luka let him live.

“He’s already gone,” Luka said when Rayne and his men pulled up to the house in two different vehicles. “The broker already has him.”

“Broker?” Rayne looked confused. “What in the fuck is going on here?”

“The death of this city if I don’t get Spencer back,” Luka snarled. He pulled out his phone and opened the app that was tracking the beacon. Luka furrowed his brows when the beacon showed that Spencer was still in the house. They must have searched him before they’d carted him away.

This time Luka wouldn’t make any errors. He walked back inside, went to the room, and saw the device lying on a rickety nightstand. He snatched it up and left the house, unsure where to go. There were too many places to hide Spencer in the city, too many buildings and homes. There had to be an easier way to find his mate.

“Just tell us what you want,” Rayne said. “We’ll make it happen.”

“I want you to reverse time,” Luka snarled. “I want you to give me back my mate before he was ever taken from me.”

“You know I can’t do that,” Rayne said, sympathy in his eyes. “Give me something within the realm of possibilities, and we’ll move heaven and earth to make it happen.”

Rayne wasn’t the enemy. Luka had to keep reminding himself of that fact. The wolf only wanted to help, but irrationality was warring inside Luka. He wasn’t sure which way to turn, what to do, or how to find his mate.

He looked up when Rayne’s phone rang. Then the alpha handed his phone to Luka. “It’s for you.”

Luka had no clue who would reach out to him through Rayne. He took the phone and placed it to his ear. “Speak.”

“Spencer has been tracked to the vacant building on Pine. The one that used to house some disgusting barbeque establishment. Do you know of which building I’m referring to?” Eleazar asked. “He is being held there until Lazarus arrives.”

“Toy with me on this and I’ll personally walk you out into the sun,” Luka warned.

“There is no toying. My men have also detained your friend,” Eleazar said. “Leave no evidence behind when you kill Ross.”

Luka tossed Rayne’s phone to him then jumped onto his motorcycle and tore away from the curb. He was driving so fast that he must have been just a blur to most, and he even ran two red lights, nearly causing a crash.

Of course Luka didn’t want an innocent body count, but his mind was solely focused on getting to Spencer. It didn’t take long before he arrived at the old barbeque joint. There were blinds in the windows, blocking his view, and no doubt someone was watching the streets from behind them.
