She’s pouting hard, but the gleam in her eyes is a dead giveaway that she enjoyed her time with Ellie. I don’t know why that makes me happy, but it does. I wrap my arm around her waist and jerk her onto my lap. She gasps and pushes against my chest. “Jasper!”

“Well, I can’t help it. Ellie, where did you find a princess?”

Ellie giggles. “It’sKat[A1], silly! Isn’t she pretty?”

“So pretty.” I give Sofia a wide smile. She glowers at me, but her face softens when I tip her chin up. “I mean, just look at all that glitter. You really are a princess.”

Ellie giggles. Daisy compliments Ellie’s makeup, and she says that Sofia did it. Sofia tries to get up, and I tighten my grip on her. She wiggles, and her ass brushes my cock, sending a tingle up my spine. I huff against her shoulder and dig my fingers into her side.

“Settle down. There’s a kid present,” I whisper in her ear.

She blushes and shoots me another look. It’s only at half-venom. When she glances at my lap, I nod once. “Yeah. That’s a thing.”

I can practically see the lightbulb go off in her head. She turns her attention to Daisy while leaning on the table, triggering an image of her riding me reverse cowgirl style. I can feel the blood flowing to my cock. Fuck. Wrong place, wrong time for an erection.

“So, Daisy, tell me something about your brother no one else knows.”

“Hey!” I call out.

She rolls her hips, and I grit my teeth. Daisy smirks, and I hope she doesn’t notice what Sofia’s doing to me.

“He’s crazy about holidays,” she begins. “Always wants to decorate as much as possible – inside and out. Makes treats, hangs lights, all of it. He doesn’t even care if no one else does.”

“Aww... that’s cute,” Sofia says, looking around at me.

My brain short circuits. Was that an actual compliment? I just look at the back of Sofia ’s head and try to keep myself under control.

“As a kid, he’d draw a bunch of pictures and hang them up. I swear, I have some of them. I’ll dig them up for you.”

“Don’t you dare,” I growl at her.

Sofia rolls her body against mine again, effectively shutting me up as I try to picture naked old ladies to keep my dick in check. She chuckles. “I’d love to see them. Tell me more.”

“Every year, Uncle Jazz gets more deer,” Ellie yells. “Another one this year?”

“Another reindeer. Yeah,” I promise. “Sofia, we should go.”

“Oh no. We’re staying for dinner.” She looks over her shoulder, shooting me a devilish smile. “Aren’t we, Pookie?”

Now is not the time to switch up the dynamic. She’s not supposed to be interested in my life, teasing me to shut me up or calling me pet names. She’s not supposed to be indulging Ellie or bonding with Daisy. She’s supposed to be angry, frustrated, begging me to leave so she can get away from me.

I curse under my breath as she adjusts again, nearly bouncing on my lap.

“So, he’s the opposite of a grinch,” she continues, getting a taste of victory and running with it.

“Halloween is actually his favorite. He’s never met a prop he doesn’t like. I think there’s a whole storage unit full of decorations,” Daisy answers.

“Well, Halloween is the second-best holiday. I love New Years. The promise of things changing and getting better.” Sofia softly sighs. “Plus, everyone – for one day – is hopeful and ready to be more than they were before.”

Daisy gives me a look I hate, one that’s curious. Her eyes flick between us, and she jerks her head in Sofia’s direction as if telling me she’s the one. All because of that answer? Ridiculous.

Sofia rubs herself on me again, then leans back against me. She leans up to whisper in my ear. “Now I know how to shut you up.”

“You’re playing a dangerous game,” I growl.

“But you’re all about protection.” She pats my thigh, then drags her fingers down towards my bad knee until I catch her hand. “So I have nothing to worry about.”

“Pushing your luck,” I answer, then I point at Daisy. “You too.”
