“Good.” I’ve never been in need of an ego booster, but her words are doing just that. Still, it changes nothing between us. We had sex because we were caught in a forced proximity situation. As soon as this is over, so will whatever that’s going on between us. I need to remember that before I get attached.

Sofia turns on the TV and starts watching a crime series while I idly work out until I flop back out of a crunch and groan. Sofia jumps up, rushing to me and checking my side. “Are you okay?”

“Your concern is making me feel awkward as hell,” I huff.

She eases back. “It was a lot easier giving you hell.”

“I miss it. Where’s your sass and cutthroat attitude? You haven’t complained about not being at work or not being allowed to leave or anything like that.” I sit up and rub her shoulder. “Tell me honestly … did those orgasms finally break you?”

She shoves me. “Smart-ass.”

“It’s a fair question. You told me it had been a while.”

“That doesn’t mean it broke me!” She shoves me down. “As if your dick would have any effect on-”

In one move, I wrap my hand around the back of her neck and kiss her. Her lips soften, and then she melts against me, her tongue curling with mine until she gently pushes against my chest. “We shouldn’t do this.”

“Why?”

“Choose your reason. There are plenty.” Her eyes search mine, dark, nervous. “We can say it was a mistake.”

My stomach dips. “I can’t say that.”

“Come on,” she huffs.

“I don’t normally want to repeat mistakes.” I keep her eyes with mine. “And I won’t lie to you even if it makes things easier.”

She swallows and nods. “I get that.”

“Good.” I rub the back of her neck. “What’s going on in that stuffing-free head of yours?”

She laughs softly and shakes her head before biting her lip. “About a million different things.”

“Sharing is caring.” I shrug.

“Who says any of it is related to you?”

“Hence the question.”

She picks at the carpet before her lips turn up, and she wipes her hand on my shorts. “Just figuring things out. You are a lot to take in.”

“Is now the time for a dick joke or…”

“Jasper, be serious for five seconds.”

I sigh and adjust, so I can press my forehead to hers. “It’s not ideal. I could lose my job over what we just did. Being emotionally involved in any way is grounds for removal. If you wanted someone else to take over, you could request it.”

“I don’t want to screw you over.”

“I know.” I nod. “We can pretend like it didn’t happen.”

“I don’t think that will work either.” She bites her lip and looks away while blushing. “But we could do something else to keep busy.”

“I didn’t bring Scrabble, darling. Did you pack something in your purse for us to play?”

“You could teach me some self-defense since I’m so terrible at it. Hand-to-hand stuff since we’re stuck in a room.” She shrugs. “That would kill some time.”

“True.” I nod. “Keep us busy in a good, positive way.”
