Chapter Two
Rosanne
“How about we try to seduce those guys over there?” My best friend, Mia, asked. She giggled, raising her glass towards a group of older guys drooling in our direction.
Mia stumbled on her words, her hand sloppily raising her glass, the tipsiness running thick in her head. My poor friend loved to drink more than she could handle. The problem, though, was that she would still try to flirt with those guys even if she weren’t drunk.
“Should we?” My other friend, Cassie, asked. She winked at one of the guys, a seductive smile growing on her face. “What’s better than good, rough sex after a Friday night of drinking and partying?”
It’d been two years since my best friend Bella got married to Vlad. Hangouts weren’t the same without her, and as much as I enjoyed having my other friends around, none of them were like Bella.
I miss her.
“We absolutely shouldn’t.” I cupped Mia’s chubby cheeks. “Let’s just drink, dance, and go home. Okay?”
Mia cupped my cheeks back, squishing them between her palms. “Girl, you’ve not lived until you’ve had sex with a random stranger at least once. You should try something fun sometimes.”
“Oh, please. I’d rather live a boring life than waltz my way with STDs. And what if he’s married?”
Cassie rolled her eyes. She’d always found my reasons for living a “careful” life ridiculous. “STDs?” she chuckled. “You sound like a virgin sometimes. Ever heard of something called a condom?”
My lips curled. “Yes, I have. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll ever ask a guy to use one. What if he’s married?”
“What if he’s married?” Cassie repeated my question with a sarcastic tone. “Life is all about taking risks, girl.”
I rolled my eyes. “I’m not sure that is how it works.”
Mia’s eyes glistened with mischief. “I’m sure that’s how it works.” She looked over to the guys, then at me. “I think the one in the middle likes you.”
I stole a glance at the guy in the middle. He was a tall, blonde guy with an athletic build and a somewhat handsome face. He was staring at me with thirsty eyes, almost looking like an imbecile. When he winked at me, I almost retched.
Nope. Not a chance.
I looked away from him and back at my friends. “He looks like he’s about to come in his pants by just looking at me.” I just hated guys that drooled over girls like hungry dogs.
Cassie opened her mouth to say something, but my phone buzzed in my purse, cutting her off.
The name “K” flashed on my screen when I took the phone from my bag. My stomach clenched. I wasn’t expecting a call from him tonight. I stared at my phone in shock for a good moment before excusing myself to an isolated area outside the club.
“Hello?” I answered, looking around to make sure there was no one else around.
“How was your meeting with Alex?” The voice at the other end of the phone was rough.
I sighed, thinking back to my meeting with Alex. I’d gotten him to admit that he worked for The Circle, and I was able to get his attention after three months of trying. My hard work was a waste of time.
What did I expect? Bastards like him were expected to be loyal to immoral causes.
“It didn’t go so well. He refused to tell me anything useful.” My jaws flexed with anger. I would have beaten the truth out of him if I could, but I was not a barbarian like the members of The Circle.
“You’ve got to be careful,” K said, his tone suggesting unusual concern. “They won’t let you get away with this if they catch on to you. They’ll have you killed.”
My palm balled into a fist, my fingers tightening around my phone. They had taken everything from me, and I didn’t mind giving up my life if it meant I could bring them down.
I’d even give up my soul to see their downfall.
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll do everything I can to find out the truth.” It was a promise I made at Eric’s grave. I would not be satisfied until I found those who murdered my brother in cold blood.
“We’ll talk later,” K said, then he hung up.
