On the other hand, I thought it was a good thing. If he went to jail, then he would be out of my life and Kaity’s as well. I wouldn’t have to worry about him finding out about her.
Yes. It’s a good thing, right?
Right.
I merged my car into the busy road, as my phone buzzed on the console and an unknown number flashed on my screen. I wasn’t a huge fan of answering calls from unknown numbers, but I had a child now, and it could be an emergency.
I pulled my car to a curb by the roadside and answered. “Hello?”
“Your voice still sounds as lovely as it did six years ago.”
My blood froze and my heart climbed up my throat, pounding and hammering. I didn’t want to believe it, but I’d heard his baritone voice loud and clear.
Damien!
My gaze dragged to the road, and shivers trickled down my spine as my eyes met two stone-cold, icy-blue eyes. Damien was a stroll away from me, leaning on his tinted Lamborghini.
Holy shit!
I first gasped at how handsome he looked in his dark gray, three-piece suit. Then my breath stuttered with the realization that Damien's presence only meant one thing: I was in some sort of danger.
A smirk darkened his features as if he were bragging that he’d caught me and there was no escaping now.
My adrenaline pumped in excess, my brain working extra hard to get me out of the danger lurking ahead.
My hand slipped down from my ear, my fingers quivering as I tapped on theend callbutton. My engine roared to life, clenching my fingers around the steering wheel, the adrenaline surging through me gave way to only one thought: escape.
I swerved back into the road, speeding as fast as I could and away from Damien. For a second, I was relieved that I’d managed to get away from him, but when I glanced at the rearview mirror, my stomach clenched as his car inched closer like a predator clinging to his prey.
Pushing my feet on the accelerator, I sped around a corner, my tires screeching against the pavement. Reaching the end of the corner, I swerved into the busy road to my right. Staring at the rearview mirror again, I sighed with relief that I’d lost Damien, at least for a moment. My racing heart slowed down, and I caught my breath.
My relief was short-lived, however, as I saw Damien’s car emerging behind me again.
Oh crap!
My breath caught in my throat. I accelerated my car again and swerved into an alleyway, not noticing that it was a dead end. My pulse hitched as Damien’s car came to a halt behind mine. As he got out of his car and walked over to mine, I held my breath. I had no idea why he was there or what to expect.
He could kill me right here in this alley and no one would ever know.Christ.
I nearly jumped out of my skin when he knocked on my car window, his muffled voice seeping through.
“Are you fucking trying to kill yourself! Get out, or do you want me to drag you out myself?”
Fear trickled like ice water through my veins. I was trembling so much, as I slowly stepped out of my car. I inhaled a sharp breath, my heart pounding against my throat with each movement I made. I’d come to a dead end, and I couldn’t run from him anymore.
I had no choice but to accept what would happen next. He found me, and I had to face him at some point if I didn’t want to spend the rest of my life running.
His gaze locked onto mine; my heart was racing from the intensity of his stare. I watched as his expression changed, a smirk seemed to edge off at the corners of his mouth, but his eyes remained dark and intense. For a moment, the air tensed by the silence. As he inched closer, fear and panic clouded my reasoning.
I paced backward, reeling away from him as much as I could. My back hit my car, marking another dead end, and leaving me sandwiched between the car and death himself.
“Damien…” I gasped. “Please…”
It was too late. He spread out his arms on either side of me and flattened his palms on my car, blanketing me with the smell of his cologne.
“You manage to exceed my expectations every time,Roza.”His smile darkened. “Too bad you can’t run away from me. Not anymore.”
“What do you want?” I asked, my voice strangled with fear.
