He dragged his gaze away from me and looked at her. “What?”

She snorted. “Right. I see how it is. I’m the third wheel, huh?”

Fuck. She’d said it sarcastically, but there’d been a tiny hint of truth to the statement.

Vaughn had heard it too.

“Hey.” He grabbed both sides of her face and tipped her head right back so he could gaze down at her, our argument clearly forgotten. “You are the first wheel, Roach. Always.” He dropped an upside-down kiss on her mouth.

When he let her go and she straightened, her gaze landed on me. Before I could think about it too much, I traced the back of my hand over her collarbone, then danced featherlight fingertips over her skin.

She shivered when I trailed my fingers between her tits, and then lower to the barely-there scrap of see-through fabric that covered her pussy.

She gasped, and I played with the edges of the material, lowering it a little so my fingertips brushed her mound.

I leaned in and kissed her softly. “He’s hot,” I whispered over her lips. “And infuriating, and we have history. But fuck, Little Demon. He’s not you. You aren’t ever second best to me. I want you both.”

She glanced over her shoulder at Vaughn, but my words hadn’t been loud enough for him to hear.

She grinned up at me. “This road trip is going to be fun then, isn’t it?”

Kian went home and packed bags for all of us, while Vaughn hung around the club as my own personal bodyguard. He’d been relaxed earlier, sitting on a couch near the bar with a glass of bourbon and Coke. His gaze had flicked around the room, taking in the scene, but it had continued to come back to me before wandering off again.

But after Kian’s little bomb drop, Vaughn’s gaze didn’t leave me for a single second. He stopped drinking and followed me around the room, barely a few steps behind, like he was afraid at any moment, someone might pull a knife and run it across my throat.

I didn’t even mind because after that second note, I was vaguely worried about that myself.

Bliss pulled me aside and cast an eye over my shoulder at Vaughn. “What’s going on? He’s stuck to you like glue all of a sudden.”

“Much the same way Nash is following you around.” I waved to him hovering behind her. He was supposed to be serving drinks, but he was distracted as hell.

Bliss nibbled on her plump bottom lip. “The MC stuff has everyone on edge. War hasn’t been home in days.”

“Neither has Fang.”

We both sighed.

I rubbed her baby bump gently. I didn’t want to worry her any more than I had to, but she was my best friend. I didn’t want to lie to her either. “I’ve had some threats come through my mailbox. Did you get anything like that?”

Her eyes went wide. “No. Nothing. What sort of threats? Do you think it was from the Sinners? Fang has made no secret of the fact you’re his woman. They might come after you to get to him.”

I shook my head. “I don’t know what to think. But it’s more likely they’d come for you, seeing as you’re practically War’s wife. He’s a much higher-ranking member than Fang is. I think these threats are to do with my mom’s murder.”

Bliss’s bottom lip trembled with worry for me. “Or Caleb and his friends trying to scare you…”

I laughed, but it had a hysterical tinge to it. “How did we get here? Where I have multiple suspects for the person stalking me?”

Bliss, being the best friend she was, who knew me better than anyone and had gone through many a wild ride herself, put her arms around me. “I don’t know.”

“I’m scared,” I admitted, because she was one of the only people I could say that to. I tried so hard to be strong. I’d spent my entire life making sure nobody ever saw me as weak.

But this was getting to me. I’d only just built myself back up after the attack, and at every corner, there was something new, fighting to drag me down and drown me in fears and worries and disaster scenarios.

She pulled back to look me in the eye. “I’m scared too. But you know what? If I had a crystal ball that would have told me this was where I’d end up, I would still choose it, over and over again. I’d choose them.” She jerked her head toward the door where Nash and Scythe were watching us. “I’d choose this baby. This life. I’d choose you.”
