I couldn’t put it all together quick enough.
But Caleb did. His laughter echoed in my ears. He slowly walked backward to his car, holding the gun on me the entire time. “This is so great. You two are only now working out you’re sisters? I have to admit, I didn’t know either, until yesterday when I finally took the time to do my research on both of you. What a coincidence, huh? I guess I have a type.” He looked me up and down, taking in my slight frame. “I think I liked fucking you better though, Rebel. Your sister is a fat bitch, just like my ex over there, hiding behind you.”
My sister.
She’d been there all along, and I hadn’t even known.
Caleb grabbed her arm, twisting it roughly. “If you’ll excuse me, we have a business meeting to attend. Was nice seeing you two again.”
Anger rolled through me. Hot and fast, adrenaline spiking in my blood until it rushed in my ears, trying to drown everything else out.
“Let the girl go,” Fang growled at Caleb. “So help me fucking God, you piece of shit, I will kill you where you stand. Let her go.”
Hugh turned the gun on Fang.
I didn’t hesitate. It was one thing for them to aim guns at me.
I wasn’t losing any more of my people. I grabbed the gun from my purse, lifted it, and fired.
The crack was thunder, the gun recoiling so hard my arms jerked with the force.
The single bullet struck Hugh in the chest.
His eyes went wide with surprise, and he stared down at the ripped hole in his shirt, a large circle of blood spreading around it. He dropped to his knees, face-planting in the loose soil around the edge of the grave.
A hush fell, all of us staring at the man dying on the ground, gurgling, and making pitiful noises as he drowned in his own blood.
My fingers trembled so bad I could barely hold the gun, but I took aim again, this time at Caleb.
He had my sister by the arm, dragging her backward toward the car.
But I wasn’t letting him go. Not again.
I didn’t care if he shot back at me. As long as it wasn’t at someone I loved.
I strode forward, arms out, steadying the gun with every step I took. Each one filled me with power. He could shoot me if he wanted, but that would be where it ended. If he shot me, he’d have six guys on him in an instant. He couldn’t shoot them all.
There was no escape for him now. I drove him backward, striding forward like I was seven feet tall instead of five. It didn’t matter.
This was the revenge I’d wanted all along.
The one I’d obsessed over.
It was mine for the taking, and we all knew it.
Caleb’s back hit the side of his car. He let go of my sister long enough to fumble for his keys.
“Run!” I screamed at her, finger hovering over the trigger. I didn’t trust my aim to shoot with her so close to him. She just needed to take two steps to her left. Two tiny feet, and this could all be over.
Instead, she stepped in front of him.
Her arms spread wide, shielding him, and putting herself right in the path of the bullet I was so close to firing. “Don’t shoot! Oh God, please! Don’t shoot!”
“Move, Kara!” I screamed again. “This needs to end. He needs to die!”
Caleb’s laughter echoed back from behind his human bodyguard. “She’s not going to do that. I’ve got your niece and I’m the only one who knows where she is.” His eyes glinted with the evil that came straight from his soul. “You kill me, her baby is dead too.”
The end…for now.
