I didn’t give a shit that she’d opened my phone. A fact that I chose not to explore, considering cyber-security was my fucking job and the one time Kane thought about touching one of my devices, I’d put him in a headlock.

“Hey,” Gray’s exhausted voice drifted through the speaker.

“That bad, huh?” I asked.

“Lily just filled me in on the missing details of her past.”

“Fuuuuuck,” I made eye contact with Sam and she grimaced.

“That about sums it up. I’m assuming you got my messages.”

“Yup. Phone was a burner, purchased at a gas station in Dallas. No credit card was linked to it, so I’m assuming it was cash. Lucky for us the place has cameras and has conveniently digitized all their footage to the cloud. If you can give me the date the messages started, I can start combing through it, to see if anything stands out.”

“Thanks, man, I’ll send it to you. Have you guys found anything in the files Baz gave you?”

“Not much,” Sam answered. “We’re worried it’s outdated. The possibility’s high that after Baz and his friend’s operation to retrieve his sister, they wouldn’t want to run the risk of anyone else finding them. My gut tells me they would’ve left that location, new phone numbers, new personnel, all of it.”

Sam answered his questions as I broke through the firewalls that were keeping me from accessing the camera footage. It didn’t take long and within minutes I had it uploaded to our personal server so that Gray could access it from his computer back in the office.

When it was done, I looked up from my screen to find Sam’s eyes watching me closely. She’d hung up the phone without me noticing and I wasn’t sure how much time had passed since she did.

“It’s fascinating, watching you work. I feel like I could strut around the room completely naked and you wouldn’t even notice.”

“I can assure you, kitten, if you were walking around naked, I’d fucking notice. Then, I’d have you bent over this table so fast you wouldn’t know what happened.” My skin grew hot at the image and my dick pulsed behind my boxers that I’d thrown on after getting out of bed.

“Uh uh, don’t even think about it. We have to be at the gym in ten minutes.” She was backing away from me and I rose to my feet wanting to hunt her down like she was my prey. “I mean it, Roe, we’re going to get fat from all the takeout food we’ve been eating if we don’t stick to our work out schedule.”

“You’d be fucking gorgeous no matter what size you were.” She’d moved to put the bed between us and I walked around the end of it, trapping her against the nightstand. Just as I reached for her, she jumped onto the bed. “That was an impressive move, how long do you think you can run from me? This room isn’t that big, kitten.”

Her eyes darted to the door and I hooked my hands around her calves while she was distracted and flipped her back onto the bed, her body bouncing until I covered it with my own. Her legs hooked around my hips and she slid her toes into the waistband of my briefs, lowering them down my ass.

“You let me catch you, didn’t you?” She hadn’t put up much of a fight and we both knew she could’ve kicked my ass if she’d wanted to.

“Maybe, do you really care if I did?” Her hands gripped my ass and pulled me tight against her core.

“Nope, I really don’t.”

We skipped the gym and she didn’t complain once.

The next few days passed in a blur. We’d sunk deep into Baz’s files and only came up for air to either eat or fuck when I couldn’t stand another second of not touching her.

But the day I’d been dreading was here. We were driving back home today and even though I’d promised her and myself that nothing would change, it felt like it already was. Sam was quiet as she packed her bag.

At least we had the ride back to ourselves. Baz hadn’t completely turned down the offer to work with us. However, he had a ranch full of animals that needed caring for and he couldn’t just up and leave them on their own for long periods of time. He’d promised to make the trip to Little Falls when he’d found a ranch manager that could watch over the place.

“Ready?” I asked when she closed her bag and looked around the room once more to see if she’d left anything.

“I think so. You got all the files, right?” She bent down, lifting the bed covers to look underneath. “Gross, remind me to never do that again.”

“Aw, come on. The room wasn’t that bad. I think we may have to come back every year to celebrate.” I cringed inwardly at the assumption that we’d be together that long. So much for not being too pushy and freaking her out.

“Maybe,” she gave me a sad smile and grabbed her bag.

A flashback of the last time she’d walked away from me in a hotel room had my breath halting in my lungs. The pain was intense, as if years hadn’t passed to dull the sting of rejection at all. Only this time, history didn’t repeat itself and when she looked back at me over her shoulder, she stopped and reached out her hand.

Crossing to her, I linked our fingers and brought our joined hands to my lips. “Doesn’t matter where we are, kitten. I’m yours.”
