I enter the dining room with my daughter, and one of the servers comes over. He beams when he sees us.
“Good evening, Mr. Clements. Miss Katie.”
“Jethro.”
“Come this way. Your table is ready.”
Nudging Katie ahead of me, the three of us make our way through the mass of tables to our reserved booth at the far end. As we walk, my eye is caught by a flash of red, which makes me pause. Then I see what caught my attention. A woman with a bright red sweater dress and leggings was sitting at one of the larger tables with a group of friends, a mix of men and women. She’s laughing at something the woman next to her is saying. Her light brown hair is loose about her shoulders, looking like it’s fighting the natural wave. Her green eyes spark joy, and a smile lights up her face.
It takes me a moment to realize why she looks familiar. Those green eyes give it away. That woman almost ran Katie over on the slopes earlier today.
I can’t help but stare. When we encountered each other earlier, something about how she glared at me made my chest squeeze. There was a fire she had kept at bay that intrigued me, and those green eyes were enough to suck me in. She has an incredible body as well. Even with the ski suit on, I saw how it tightened around her ass when she bent over to pick up her ski poles. She had some curves, and they looked good on her.
I’m someone who loves curves on women.
Wait, what is going on? She almost hurt Katie, and you’re drooling over her?
That is when her eyes meet mine, and something shifts between us. She recognizes me, and from the way her smile fades and the delight draws back, it’s not in a good way. I feel something clench in my stomach as she looks at me.
Whoa, what is going on? Something isn’t right here.
Turning away quickly, I hurry after Jethro and Katie. I can’t be caught staring at her like that. It will make me look like an idiot.
But even as I sit with my daughter and pick up the menu, I can’t help but look over at her table. She’s not looking at me, but I can see her clearly. She seems more relaxed now as if she’s forgotten about me.
Somehow, I don’t want her to forget me.
Chapter 3
Jade
“Cheers!”Carmendeclaresaswe clink glasses. “Happy birthday to me!”
I mumble in response and sip my drink. It’s already my third lemonade and lime, and I feel it going to my bladder. I’m going to need to take a bathroom break soon. At least that will soothe my ears with the pulsating beat pumping in my head. I have no idea why the bar has to have the music up this loud.
“How are you feeling, Jade?” Carmen asks as she leans towards me, her voice loud over the noise. “Are you still sore from earlier?”
“A little bit. I’m probably going to be worse tomorrow.” I shrug. “Nothing I can’t handle. I’ve had worse happen to me.”
“If only I could find a hot guy so I could fall at his feet,” Carmen giggles.
“Excuse me?”
“Maddison told me. A hot dad as well. Now that’s sexy.”
I groan. Carmen is just man crazy.
“He’s more than likely married, so that would be wasting my time, wouldn’t it? And I’m not looking for another relationship so soon. So you can drool over him on your own if you can find him.”
Carmen gives me a knowing look.
“Maybe you don’t want to drool over him because you’re thinking about a certain someone?”
“What?”
“Well, you were with Nate for quite a while. Maybe…”
I can guess what’s coming next, and I hold up my hand.
