“I…I know I ate today.” Jade frowns. “But I’m not really sure when.”

“You don't pay attention to when you need to eat?”

“I’m busy. I’m sure you know what it’s like,” she sneers.

I try to ignore that and put the bowl on the table, a spoon, and the bread roll on a plate beside it.

“It’s not much, but that should be enough to settle your stomach.”

“This is your medicine for me, is it?”

“It works for me.”

Jade looks like she doesn’t know what to say. But she approaches the table and sits down, glancing at me before looking back at the food.

“I was thinking of making a grilled cheese instead,” I go on, suddenly feeling like I need to fill the air, “but you didn’t have any cheese.”

“Right. I need to do the shopping at some point.”

“Do you have time to do the shopping?”

Jade gives me a sharp glance. But she doesn’t answer as she picks up the spoon and begins to eat. Soon, she’s practically wolfing her food down, and the soup is rapidly disappearing, along with the roll. I sit on the couch and watch her, glad she has some appetite back. At least she’s not looking thinner than when I last saw her. If she were, I would have demanded that she stay with me. It would have complicated things, yes, but at least someone would have been around to look after her.

Finally, Jade finishes her food and gulps down the glass of water I put beside her. Then she sits back with a sigh.

“That feels better.” She gives me a small smile. “Thanks, Finn.”

“Let’s hope you’re not sick after that.”

“I hope not. I’m fed up with being sick.” Jade grimaces as she presses a hand to her stomach. “Whatever has hit me had better pass soon; I’m not going to be too happy if this takes forever to leave my body.”

“I’m sure it’ll pass.” I hesitate. “I know this isn’t what you want to hear, Jade…”

“What is it?”

“I’m not comfortable leaving you alone. After what I just saw…”

Jade stiffens.

“You want to stay and make sure I’m okay?”

“You were unconscious on the floor, and you hit your head. You also just threw up as well. Do you think you’re in a position to be alone?”

“I can take care of myself.”

“Oh, really?” I fold my arms and sit back. “Well, good luck trying to get rid of me. I’m not leaving until the morning when I know you haven’t got a concussion and you’ve actually had a decent night’s sleep.”

“But…”

“I’m not going to argue with you on this, Jade. You scared the shit out of me, and I don’t want to go through that again. I’m sure you don’t want to be alone if you feel like crap.”

Jade scowls and folds her arms.

“Maddison can come and stay with me. She’s done it before.”

“Like I’ve already said, you’re not getting rid of me.”

I am prepared to argue on this. I might have been content to leave her be if she was a little peaky but coping well enough, but I found her unconscious on the floor. That is not something I can walk away from.
