That makes me laugh as the bile burns in my belly—the gall to say that after what he did. I can’t believe how ridiculous he is. How did he think this was going to work?
“If you loved me, you wouldn’t have cheated on me,” I snap. “And you wouldn’t be leading another girl on. That’s just disgusting.”
“I made a mistake, but I won’t do it again! I promise!”
“I don’t believe you, and I made that clear when I broke it off with you. I said I don’t give cheaters another chance, and you have blown it. There’s no hope for us, and I don’t intend to work on it.” I jab a finger at him. “Now, I can’t tell you to leave the resort. But I can tell you to stay the hell away from me. I don’t want to see you, and I don’t want you approaching me and starting a conversation.”
“What if we’re in the same group and talk to the same person?”
“I’ll handle that. You and Carmen screwed up by coming here. If you loved me, you would listen when I tell you to do something. Now fuck off!”
So much for having a weekend away at my favorite place; Nate’s presence has now tainted it. I would be returning to Denver if I hadn’t come with Maddison. I had an email earlier from my landlord about my bookstore, and I needed to read it correctly. Maybe leaving early would help me, in a way; business and work-related reasons are the only things that Carmen would accept for not coming to her birthday party.
It would also be an excuse to get away from Nate.
“Please, Jade…” Nate hurries after me again, catching up to me in the hallway. “I really will make up for everything. I promise. Just hear me out. I’m sure we can sort this out.”
“No, we can’t.”
“Jade…”
I squeak as he grabs my arm and turns me, my back bumping against the wall. That hits some of the bruises on my back, and I cringe and buckle a little. Nate frowns.
“What’s wrong with you?”
“None of your business,” I respond through gritted teeth. “Now get your hands off me and get lost. Or I will scream and get the staff to throw you out.”
Nate looks bemused at that.
“You don’t like causing a scene. I can’t see you doing that.”
“Keep pushing me, and you’ll find out I can.”
“You can’t delay what we need to do, Jade.”
I glare at him.
“You can’t live in denial for the rest of your life. I told you that we are done. I’m not getting back with you, and I have no intention of changing my mind. Get that into your thick skull and leave me alone!”
“Jade—"
“Stop it, Nate!” I really want to scream at him. “I told you what I wanted, and this isn’t it. If you have an ounce of respect for me, listen to me.”
Nate falters. I think he will actually listen for a moment, but then he comes closer to me, arms out. He’s not going to listen to me at all.
I slap him, the sound echoing around us. Nate’s expression turns to one of stunned amazement. Then I realize what I’ve just done. I hadn’t hit him when I found out he had been cheating; I had just shouted at him.
Shit. I shouldn’t have done that. But I’m not about to apologize. He is driving me insane.
“What’s going on here?”
My heart pounds when I hear a familiar growl, and I look around to see Katie’s dad approaching us. He’s looking from me to Nate with that scowl that seems to be permanently on his face.
But right now, he looks like the most welcoming sight I’ve seen in a long time.
