“What? What are you talking about? No, of course not! Why would I waste my time and get back with a cheater?”
“Because I love you.”
“Well, I don’t love you!” I snap back. “This baby is not yours, and no matter what you say, you’ll not have the narrative to fit what you believe it is. Even if the baby were yours, I would want nothing to do with you. Now fuck off and leave me alone!”

“There’s her dad’s house,” Katie says as she points. “Maddison said it had some rose bushes in the garden with a red front door.”
“And it looks like she’s already got a visitor,” I grumble as I pull up behind a black sedan. I can see Nate and Jade arguing on the sidewalk with a man I’m guessing is Jade’s dad standing on the lawn with his arms folded and a garden hose in his hand. He looks ready for a fight. I can only hope he doesn’t turn that hose onto me.
“Wait here, Katie.” I undo my seatbelt. “I don’t want you getting in the middle of this.”
“Why?”
“Just…do as you’re told, will you?”
Katie sighs and sits back with her arms folded.
“Okay, fine.”
Grateful that my daughter is listening, I get out just as I hear Jade shouting at Nate.
What are you talking about? No, of course not! Why would I waste my time and get back with a cheater?
“Because I love you.”
“Well, I don’t love you!” Jade snaps. She looks like she doesn’t know whether to lose her temper or burst into tears. “This baby is not yours, and no matter what you say, you’ll not have the narrative to fit what you believe it is. Even if the baby were yours, I would want nothing to do with you. Now fuck off and leave me alone!”
That pulls me up short. What did she just say? Was she pregnant? For a moment, everything around me spins as the words sink in. Jade was pregnant. With his baby?
From the way Jade is talking, it sounds like it.
Then Jade sees me. Her face immediately pales, her eyes widening. She looks…scared. Why is she scared of me? Nate turns around, scowling when he sees me.
“What the hell are you doing here?”
“I came to see Jade.” Finding my voice and the ability to use my body, I stride over to Jade and put an arm around her shoulders, grateful that Jade leans into me. “Why are you still hassling her? I thought you were told to go away.”
“I’m not hassling her!” Nate protests. “I just want to talk to Jade. There’s nothing wrong with that.”
“There is when you’re stressing her out. She doesn’t need this in her condition.”
Nate huffs and puts his hands on his hips.
“What are you…? What gives you the right to talk to me like this?”
“Jade’s my girl, and she’s carrying my baby,” I snarl back. “I won’t have you harassing her like this.”
The words are out of my mouth before I realize what I’m saying. I can feel the shock coming from all three of us, but I am not about to take them back. Signaling at the car to tell my daughter to join us, I urge Jade towards the house.
“Let’s go inside, honey. You need to sit down. This is not needed right now.”
“Finn, what…?”
“Inside,” I mutter near her ear. “We can talk while we’re inside.”
