“I know, and I do remember that offer. But I’ve got it handled.”

“Are you sure? You don’t need to worry about your pride here. I’m your father.”

I know that, but I feel awful asking anyone else after being so independent. It makes me feel like a scrounger. Dad says he knows I’m not, but it doesn’t make me feel any better.

A car pulls up outside our house, distracting me from saying anything in return. It takes me a moment to realize who has arrived and is getting out of the car. My heart sinks. Oh, God, really? Did he have to follow me here?

“Oh, great.” Dad has seen him as well. “Do you want me to get rid of him?”

“No, I’ll do it.” I hesitate before walking past him. “Just be prepared to use the garden hose on him if he doesn’t bugger off.”

“Why the garden hose?”

“So you don’t take a swing at him. Getting him wet would be better than getting in trouble for smacking him.”

Dad grunts.

“You like to take the fun away, don’t you?”

I ignore that as I storm over to Nate, who is approaching me. He holds up his hands.

“I’m not here for a fight, Jade.”

“Well, you’re going to get one.” I fold my arms. “What the hell do you want? And how did you know where to find me?”

“I was with you for quite a while, Jade. I know where you would go if you need a break from everything.” Nate gestures at my family's house. “You’re quite predictable.”

I hate that I am, and I hate that Nate knows this about me.

“You went back to my apartment, didn’t you?”

“I wanted to talk to you without Maddison getting in the way, but the door was locked, you weren’t answering the intercom, and Maddison was in the bookstore. I had a feeling you had come back home.” Nate runs his fingers through his hair with a sigh. “Jade, why are you making this difficult? You’re pregnant now, and we need to do the right thing for the baby.”

“What do you mean, do the right thing?”

“Get back together. I’ll even marry you if that’s what you want. I don’t want my baby without a dad.”

I take a deep breath and let it out slowly. I will hurt him if I let my temper get the better of me. That’s more than enough drama for me right now.

“You are not the father, Nate.”

“You say that…”

“I know you’re not the father. I’m only a couple of months along. You and I broke up months ago, long before I got pregnant.” I realize that I’ve got a hand protectively on my belly, and I lower it. “You are not the father, and I’m certainly not going to get back together with you. Why would I?”

Nate looks confused.

“Then who is the dad?”

“It’s none of your business.”

“It is my business!”

“How? I’m your ex-girlfriend, someone you cheated on! You do not need to get in my business!”

I know I’m shouting now, and the neighbors are going to get very nosy after this, but I don’t care. Nate is not listening, and I’m fed up with things going into his head and not staying there.

“But…” Nate frowns. “We were planning to get back together, weren’t we?”
