Not when Jade is involved.
For a moment, I think Jade is going to argue with me. But her shoulders slump, and she looks away with a heavy sigh.
“Okay. Fine. But you’re staying on the couch. That’s where you’re staying.”
I don’t respond. I would prefer to be in bed with her, but I’m not about to push it. Sighing, I get my cell phone out. I will need to call Mom to make sure she’s there for Katie.
She’s right. I do need to hire a helper. And I hope Mom isn’t going to be smirking, knowing that I’m spending the night with a woman she thought might be a good match for me.
She knows me far better than I want to admit.
Chapter 15
Jade
God,whycan’tIsleep? I’m sure I’ve been lying in bed staring at the ceiling for hours now, but my alarm clock says it’s just been a couple of hours. It’s not even ten yet. I was barely in bed around this time, but after eating and getting my paperwork sorted, Finn ran a bath for me and told me to have an early night. I’m not about to argue with him.
It’s been a while since I had a guy look after me. Nate could cook, but he did it for himself and used far too many spices. I can’t remember if he ever ran a bath for me. But Finn made something simple without any extra flair, helped me with the paperwork when my head hurt too much, and then ran a bath. He looked after me, and I didn’t even ask him to.
If he thinks that it will make me forgive him, though, he’s wrong. That’s not going to work. But I do appreciate it.
It’s just annoying that the hot bath hasn’t made me want to fall asleep. My mind is still racing, and it’s driving me mad. Why can’t I just turn myself off so I can sleep? It’s not fair.
Maybe I can do some browsing on my phone. I put it on its charger on the bedside table but haven’t turned it on yet. I could go and get my laptop, but Finn is probably still awake, and he would usher me back to bed.
It would also tempt me to usher him into bed with me. Not a good idea.
Rolling over, I get my phone and turn it on. It starts buzzing almost immediately as it loads up, vibrating in my hand for quite a while. I turn off the vibration mode and see how many messages I’ve got. Usually, I get a few, but not this many. And lots of phone calls I missed.
I don’t need to check them to know that most of these are from Nate. He would try my cell phone after not getting through on the work phone.
Damn, that guy. Why can’t he move on and leave me alone?
“You doing okay?”
I gasp and drop my phone on my face. It hits my cheek and eye, which starts throbbing. Now that seemed to hurt more than when I hit my head on the floor.
“Jade!” There are quick footsteps, and then Finn is leaning over me. “You okay?”
“Do you not ever knock going into a room?” I snap. “You could’ve warned me.”
“Sorry.” Finn looks sheepish. “I heard a lot of buzzing from your room, so I wanted to be sure you weren’t waking up.”
“I haven’t gotten to sleep yet.” Shifting back to sit up and lean against the headboard, I pick up my cell phone from the mattress before it tips onto the floor. “I thought I’d do some web surfing.”
Finn shakes his head.
“You shouldn’t be looking at bright lights when you’re not well.”
“I’m an adult. Good luck trying to enforce that.” I stick my tongue out at him as I start to go through the messages. “Fucking idiot.”
“Charming.”
“What? Oh, sorry, not you.”
“That’s a relief. I think,” Finn grunts. “Who were you talking about?”
He will find out soon anyway, and I need someone to talk to. I sigh and gesture with my phone.
