“Morning.” I take a deep breath and try not to stumble over my words. “Jade Summers. I’m here to see Mr. Clements at nine?”
“Of course. Mr. Clements told me to send you in as soon as you arrive.” The brunette gestures towards the door. “Just knock and enter.”
Bracing myself, I go to the door and knock. Through the glass, I see both men turn. And I feel like my heart has stopped.
It’s him. Finn and his brother Kenny. They’re in the office.
Oh, God. Finn Clements. He’s my landlord.
How did I not figure this out sooner? How did I miss this?
I should be barging into the office and demanding an explanation, but I’m frozen. I can’t move, staring in shock at Finn as he crosses to the door and opens it.
“Jade?”
My heart pounds in my chest as I stare at him, the man I gave myself to just a couple of nights ago. My landlord.
Shit, how did I manage to sleep with my landlord?
“You…you are…”
“I think you’d better come in,” Finn says as he reaches for me, but I slap his hand away.
“Don’t touch me!”
“Jade…”
“No, you lied to me. You knew I was your tenant, didn’t you?” I push him in the chest, causing him to stumble back. “Were you teasing me when you were doing what you did? Did you know the whole time?”
Finn hesitates, looking unsure. Then Kenny clears his throat.
“I think…I’d better go back to my office.”
“Kenny…” Finn starts.
“No, you clearly need to be alone.” Kenny steps around Finn and gives Jade a sheepish nod. “I’ll give you two some privacy. And you might want to take it into your office, Finn. The glass mostly insulates the noise.”
It’s then that I realize that the brunette secretary is watching us. She’s not even trying to hide the fact that she’s listening in. I can’t help but feel disgusted at seeing this.
As Kenny shuffles out of the office, Finn grabs my hand and pulls me inside. I almost drop my bag, finally giving up and leaving it on the floor as Finn closes the door. He turns to me, holding up his hands.
“Now, before we go any further…”
“How long?”
“What?”
“How long did you know that I was your tenant?” I demand. “Did you know when we were up in the mountains? After you and I had sex for the first time? When was it?”
Finn looks uncomfortable as he answers.
“I knew I had a tenant with a bookstore, but I had no idea you were the tenant until Katie took me there.”
“So before you and I fucked like rabbits.”
He had known. And he said nothing about it. I feel sick. I can’t even look at him, so I turn away and pace across the room. It’s either that or I hit him, and I don’t want to do that when we’re clearly being watched.
“I can’t believe this.” Running my hands through my hair, I turn to him. “You lied to me, Finn. I was starting to like you. I actually thought you were a decent guy. But you’re just a slimeball who snuck past my defenses and got me into bed with you. That’s just disgusting.”
