“She’s been incessant as well. It’s ridiculous.”

Maddison snorts and finishes off her can.

“I’ve told her that she did the wrong thing, disrespected your decision, and that she needs to back off. I can’t believe she won’t listen.”

“Well, Nate’s a good liar, from what I’ve found out,” I say gloomily. “And Carmen isn’t as smart as I thought if she’s still believing him.”

“Unless she’s trying to apologize,” Maddison suggests.

I scoff at that.

“Since when has she been able to apologize for anything? She certainly hasn’t for me. She’s no better than Nate.”

Although I will be impressed and more likely to forgive if Carmen actually says sorry without trying to put it back on other people. How did I not think this was a deal breaker before?

Another howl of wind grabs my attention, and I look out the window. It had started snowing earlier in the day, but in the last hour, it had picked up, and the snow was falling faster and thicker. The wind was also a new addition, making the snowflakes swirl around to the point they looked like they were on speed.

“Maybe we should cut this short this evening. The snow’s getting worse out there, and I don’t want you to get snowed in with me or caught out in that.”

“I’m sure you and I can figure out something if we are snowed in.” Maddison giggles. “We can keep each other warm.”

“Hilarious, Maddison. Besides, you said you’ve got a shift early tomorrow morning, right? Do you want to be caught here with that tomorrow?”

“Okay, fine. I’ll take a hint.” Maddison gets to her feet, her smile fading as she looks at me. “Are you sure you’ll be okay on your own, Jade? Nobody should be alone in a storm like this.”

I wave away her concern.

“Don’t be worried about me. I’ve got the heating on, and I have plenty of blankets and candles in case there’s a power cut, but I don’t see that happening. I’ll be okay.”

“If you…”

“Maddison, how long have I lived here? We’ve had quite a few snowstorms, and I’ve gotten through all of them. Why is this one any different?”

Maddison bites her lip.

“I…I’m not really sure. I’m just concerned about my friend after everything, I guess.”

I approach her and hug her. Maddison returns the hug, and then I step back.

“I love you, Maddison. You’re a great friend.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

A knock at the door makes both of us jump. And I find myself freezing. Maddison glances at me.

“Are you expecting someone?” she whispers.

“No. I’m not expecting anyone.” I gulp. “You don’t think it’s Nate, do you? He’s the only one crazy enough to come here in this weather.”

“Well, if it’s him, I’ll make sure he goes away.” Maddison strides towards the door. “You just stay out of sight.”

Before I can move to do as she suggests, she flings open the door, but her retort dies on her lips when she sees my visitor. Then I can see why.

It’s not Nate. It’s Finn, covered in snow and shaking it out of his hair. And the sight of him makes everything inside me tighten up.

God, what is wrong with me? We had sex one night, and while it was incredible, we agreed that it would be just a one-time thing. Nothing more. We didn’t have expectations of each other. It was just sex, we walked away feeling satisfied, and that was all.

So why do I feel like I want to jump him at the mere sight of him?
