I glare at him.

“Trust you to remember that,” I grumble.

Katie giggles.

“You told me about breaking your leg before. Is that the same…?”

“Yes, it’s the same.” Kenny puts an arm around his niece’s shoulders. “And he still tried to get out of it.”

I feel like I’m being ganged up on by the two of them. I get to my feet.

“Did you want something, Katie, or did you come in to team up with Uncle Kenny?”

“Grandma has finished making dinner, and there's plenty for you two. I think she knew Uncle Kenny was coming over, so there’s quite a bit of chili and rice.”

As if on cue, my stomach growls. Chili sounds like a perfect meal after the day we’ve had. Mom does know how to make perfect chili con carne.

“That sounds like a delicious dinner,” Kenny declares. “Then maybe we’ll discuss how to decorate your cast once it’s properly dry. That should bring a bit of spark back.”

I watch him lead Katie out of the room, my daughter leaning into him. She’s really trusting of my brother, which I’m glad about. Kenny always knows how to put people at ease. He and I are chalk and cheese, but we get along well, and my brother is a natural at smoothing things over if I can’t, which can often be if I’m not mindful.

Sighing, I follow them. Hopefully, Katie didn’t hear those comments about Jade and ask if we would meet again. I got the feeling that she liked Jade, but that was not enough for me to ask the woman who drove me mad on a date.

I don’t need someone who makes my hair stand up in my life, even if she does look like the sexiest woman I’ve seen in a long time.

Chapter 6

Jade

I’mrelievedwhenIget back home, smiling when I see my store appear as we turn onto the street. Maddison pulls up on the curb.

“There you go. Do you want me to come up as well?”

“No, it’s fine. You get on home. I’ll call you tomorrow.” I grab my bag from the backseat. “Thanks again for driving, Maddison. I thought you wouldn’t be sober enough to drive, though.”

“It was just this morning I felt like crap, but you gave me plenty of time to sober up.” Maddison shrugs. “That’s normally what happens when you drive a hot single dad to the hospital for his daughter.”

I groan. Not this again.

“Maddison, stop.”

“What?”

“Stop calling him a hot single dad. It’s driving me crazy.”

“Well, he is hot, and his daughter said he was single, didn’t she? It’s clear you’re into him.”

I wish she would drop it. Sure, Finn is handsome, but he’s maddening. I’m not about to think about anything regarding him. That would just be asking for trouble.

At least Maddison’s not talking about Nate. That would drive me insane. I’m still angry that he was at the resort.

“Just no more, please? I just want to get inside and decompress before tomorrow.”

“Okay, whatever you say.” Maddison reaches out and squeezes my hand. “I’m sorry about what happened, but I’m glad you came. It was good to be up on the slopes.”

“I won’t argue with that,” I say and manage a smile at her. “You’ll hear from me tomorrow.”

“Bye.”
