“What’s so funny?”
“I haven’t said anything.”
“You don’t need to. Your face says everything.”
Kenny’s mouth twitches into a sly smile.
“I thought you went to the resort to have fun with your daughter for the weekend, not pick up a chick.”
“I wasn’t picking up a ‘chick,’” I scowl. “She was so infuriating. She almost hurts Katie, and then she ends up in a fight with her ex. What part of that do I want to get involved with?”
“She did help Katie, didn’t she? And you needed a level head, which you said just now. She sounds like an awesome woman.”
I scoff at that, although I hate to admit that Jade is close to extraordinary. She’s a take-charge person who doesn’t suffer fools gladly. There’s a sweetness beneath her rough exterior, and I saw her kindness with Katie. I admire that in a woman to be kind to my daughter. Typically, when a woman is around me, they’re only trying to get to my money and attempting to kiss me. Not Jade. She didn’t do any of that.
Then again, from the way she barely recognized my name when the doctor addressed me in the hospital, I have a feeling she has no idea who I am. Maybe that’s a good thing; it’s nice to have a bit of anonymity, even if it means that she treats me in such an infuriating manner.
“So, you agree with me, then?”
“What?” I frown at my brother. “What are you talking about?”
“You agree that she’s an awesome woman? I saw the look on your face just then.” Kenny smirks. “Is she pretty?”
“Kenny!”
“Well, is she? I doubt she would get your attention like this if she weren’t.”
I’m not about to answer that, mainly because Kenny would notice that I did find Jade attractive, which is not what I want. Sure, she’s pretty, and her gorgeous green eyes are mesmerizing, but she drives me insane. She rubs me the wrong way.
Maybe that’s my way of saying I am attracted to her because she does rub me the wrong way.
That doesn’t make any sense. And it’s not happening.
“So, you’re not going to see her again?” Kenny teases. “You didn’t even get her number?”
“Of course not! Why would I?”
“Maybe you should have. Then you could take her out and see if things are still sparking between you.”
I groan. My brother isn’t going to get off my back about this. He’s been wondering when I will start dating again, but I’m not interested. Sure, I go out on dates, but it’s only for a couple, and then I stop. There’s just nobody with that spark that intrigues me enough to stay.
Jade would just be another person who didn’t do anything for me. Even as I think that, I feel like I’m lying to myself.
MaybeIhad a knock to the head myself up on the slopes if I think like this.
A knock at the door has me looking up. Only then did I realize we didn’t shut the door. Katie is in the doorway, looking from me to Kenny. She smiles when she sees her uncle.
“Hey, Uncle Kenny.”
“Hey, monkey.” Kenny goes to her and carefully hugs her. “How’s the arm? Looking forward to skiving off school?”
“Not for long if Dad has anything to do with it,” Katie grumbles. “I’m not allowed to use it as a get-out clause.”
“You’re going to fall behind if you’re off for too long,” I remind her. “You need to keep up with it. But we can talk about that tomorrow.”
Kenny laughs.
“I seem to remember a time when you broke your leg. Didn’t you complain about going back to school because you were recovering, and you tried to get around Mom and Dad for a month straight, even after the cast came off?”
