“Just like I needed to do it with my mother.”
“But you’ve done it before,” she said.
“I have, but not like this. This is big and she knows it. I won’t call or talk to her until she apologizes. She knows I mean business. And I’ve got to know she means what she is saying. No lip service. No more being passive-aggressive. It’s in her hands and I’m fine with that. I’m fine with anything in my life as long as I’m with you. That’s my stance and I’m sticking to it. I’m going to keep saying it and doing whatever I can to get you to believe me too.”
“I believe you,” she said. “Heather and I said not that long ago that we wished we could find men that understood us. That came to us and believed in us. That were right for us. We never thought we’d find it and we both did.”
“I’d like to think it found us. Don’t you think?”
“I think you’re right,” she said. “But remember, you’re smarter than me, so you must be.”
“Wiseass,” he said. “But it’s my wise ass.”
His hands went to her face and he kissed her hard. “It is yours,” she said.
Epilogue
Six Weeks Later
“This is going to be great,”Daisy said. “I can’t believe you thought of it.”
Theo laughed at her. “Maybe all that fun inside of you is wearing off on me.”
“I’m glad I was able to do that,” she said.
They were outside in jeans, boots and jackets. For early March it was still chilly at night, but she didn’t care. It was only adding to the Moonlight Graveyard Ghost Tour.
“I can’t believe you’ve never done it,” he said.
“No one ever wanted to do it with me,” she said. She’d brought it up once to Heather and she’d said no way. Others in the shop agreed. She figured they got creeped out by it, but not her. It wasn’t real in her eyes and it was all about history too.
“I’m doing it with you,” he said.
He reached for her hand and threaded their fingers together.
The tour guide started to speak. “Our Downtown Mystic tour takes guests from the seventeenth through twentieth centuries in old Mystic with true terrifying tales from our hidden archives and remarkable history amid legends and lore. From curses to paranormal activity, there’s no shortage of the supernatural in downtown Mystic.”
“Ohhh,” Theo said, leaning down. “Spooky.”
“You’ll save me,” she said, hugging his arm. “You’re good at that.”
“I am,” he said.
It wasn’t just saving or helping people in emergencies. It was in life.
It’d taken Marion three weeks to call Theo. She must have felt he meant business. Marion actually drove to Mystic by herself. A place she said she hated to come.
She’d taken them out to lunch, then apologized to both Theo and her. Marion said that she’d never meant any harm and that someday when they had children they’d understand.
Daisy would like to think she wouldn’t do something that horrible.
She could see that Marion truly was sorry and accepted the apology. Theo did too. His mother and he had a long road to rebuilding their relationship and though he chose Daisy and she knew he would again, she also didn’t want to stand in his way by being petty and not forgiving Marion.
She’d told herself she didn’t or wouldn’t see Marion much and she could bite her tongue if need be when they did.
So yeah, he’d saved their relationship that she almost threw away.
They continued to walk around downtown, listening to stories. Some did give her the shivers, but you couldn’t live around here and not imagine things that happened hundreds of years ago.
