“You’rehelpingme? Why?”
He chuckles. “You’re clearly an only child.” The knife vanishes as quickly as it appeared. “Sorry,” he says. “Just realized Khalid will probably actually let you stab him and then Varius will throw a huge hissy fit, then he won’t fuck Micha properly and then Ma will get on to me about not getting grandkids, and well… that’s more than I can be bothered with.
“So yeah, you’re going to have to find your own knife. May I suggest asking for steak for dinner?” He cocks his head to the side. “You ain’t a veggie, right?”
I shake my head mutely, no fucking idea what else I can do. None of his words make sense in the context of being kidnapped.
“Good. Eat breakfast, gather your strength, go through my brother’s belongings to see if you can make a shiv, and I’ll check back in a couple of hours.”
My mouth gapes, but he doesn’t seem to understand how weird he is. He just heads for the door.
Just as it opens, I call out, “Wait.”
He stops, looking over his shoulder.
“Where is Khalid?”How long do I have to wait to yell at him?
He shrugs. “Don’t know, but considering he left all hush hush and right after bringing you here…” His face loses a hint of his smile. “I’d say he’s on a job.”
“A job?” I highly doubt he means the landscaping business I believed Khalid ran.
“Mmm.” Without further explanation, he nods at the tray of food behind me. “Now eat. You need fuel if you’re going to escape.”
The door shuts firmly behind him, and I’m left staring at it in utter confusion. What the ever loving fuck?
When I’m finally able to get a bit of sense back into my brain, I turn slowly to rescan the room. This is Khalid’s? It’s so...empty. An uncomfortable feeling settles in my chest at the sight of how little comfort his life has.
Shaking my head, I walk over to the closet door and pull it open. It’s as empty as the rest of the place. Four shirts on hangers. Three pants. A stack of underwear sits on the shelf below. The urge to pick one up and see if he wears boxers or briefs is quickly followed by the image of him in both.
My pussy kegels involuntarily, and I jerk my eyes away from them. Bending my knees, I check out the other shelves. A pair of four socks sit in a row.
That’s it.
That’s all he owns.
A tightness fills my lungs again, and I straighten in an attempt to ignore it.
Walking back to the bed, I sit down and stare at thetray of food.
It could be drugged…
My stomach growls.
Why would they need to drug me?
They are witches who can just lift me with a wave of their hand.
Picking up the food, I stab a piece of bacon and raise it to my lips.
Twenty-Nine
HIM
Xander’s house is empty. His belongings packed. His bed still made. He didn’t stay here last night, and I’m certain he’ll never step foot in here again. Removing my reaper mask, not liking to wear it if I’m not about to enact justice, I turn towards his bathroom.
I don’t expect to find anything given what he used to do at the hotel. The shower drain is clear of hair. There’s no flecks of toothpaste-filled spittle on the mirror. No shitstain in the toilet. There’s no reason for me to be here.
The pull of my girl urges me back home, but instead I pull out my phone and call Maddox. “I need you to shift into Xander,” I say as soon as he answers.
