“He betrayed us to the vampires.”

“Are you sure?” Rudy signs, disbelief clear in his eyes. “He’s never been anything but loyal.”

“Xander’s the only one who knows there’s a witness contradicting Khalid’s alibi for Hannah’s murder,” our Boss signs. “And, unfortunately, he knows of Scarlett. He must be dealt with.”

A plate hovers in the air, and Xander’s stone appears in a swirl of shadows in my palm.

“Don’t kill him,” my brother says, and despite my every desire to refuse this order, I don’t. He has earned my trust a thousand times over. They all have.

“Does anyone know why Xander waited seven years to move against us?” he asks, his gaze sweeping around the table.

A moment of silence rings loudly between us before my brother, Talon, shifts uncomfortably in his chair. “He’s Antonio’s godson.”

“What?” Leno demands as Krypto growls softly at his feet. “How long have you known?”

Talon looks at Varius. “Seven years ago, you told me to find out what he was hiding from and if it was worth helping him.”

He doesn’t say anything, just holds our brother’s gaze in utter silence.

“And you didn’t think that was worth sharing, bruh?” Maddox shakes his head.

“Xander didn’t want anything to do with him. He has recessive genes. He can’t shift, and Antonio only wants him to breed a line of omegas.” Meaning he won’t lose a ‘real’ pack member every few months when that position is reopened. In the coming days of war, that’ll give Death Hunt a massive edge.

“Why would he stay in the city?” I demand, my magic unsettled in my still limbs.

“I gave him a new face and scent.”

Disguise magic is fucking dangerous. Maddox using it is one thing; magic has bonded to him and given him that gift. But to try it on another often leaves them braindead and disfigured.

“Xander wanted to keep an eye on the pack so he’d know if Antonio got any leads on him. He was willing to risk death to get away. And if he was a mole, then I was planning on using him to feed false information to Death Hunt. But he never told them anything.”

“He is now, though, isn’t he?” Maddox says with a snort. “The fucker thinks we’ll lose in the coming war and picked his side.”

“That doesn’t make sense,” Rudy signs. “He told Aleric, not Antonio, and why would he run back to the Death Hunt if he’s to live as a breeder, watching his kids get killed?”

“If we’re fighting with the vampires, we’d be too weak to fend off the wolves effectively. Maybe he thinks that by pitting us against each other, he can gain favor before his return,” Talon counters.

I don’t care what Xander’s reason is. If he’s a risk to my girl’s life, he’s dead. Simple as that. My eyes go to Varius, a silent conversation passing between us.

He nods, dismissing me. “He is to arrive in three hours. I will let you know if you are required.”

When he goes back to eating, I head out.

Scarlett is sitting up in bed when I enter the room, the blanket held up to her chest as if she needs to hide. My eyes narrowing, I stop in front of the door after I close it.

“Come here,” I say, wanting her to walk naked across the room to grow confidence in her beauty.

Anxious shame flutters down our bond. I combat it with my desire, and her nostrils flare as she looks at me.

“Let me see what’s mine,” I say, my cock growing hard as I anticipate her rising.

She wets her lips, then drops the blanket, and my eyes zero in on her chest as a groan rumbles from mine. “So beautiful,” I murmur. “So perfect.”

Rosy cheeks sit under blue eyes of disbelief, making me want to torture whoever’s made her think so little of herself.

She tentatively swings her legs over the edge of the bed, then stands, leaving the blanket behind. A smile curls my lips as I drink her in. She walks towards me, each step stronger than the last, and by the time she’s standing in front of me, my cock is straining against my pants and she’s panting heavily.

“You actually brought strawberries?” she murmurs, her eyes on the box balanced on top of my fries.
