Shadow
The chaos that ensued the second my baby sister walked in the door had me ducking for cover and seeking shelter fast. My older sisters were okay to be around. I could handle them, but Joy?
Hell no! She was only sixteen and a major pain in the ass. As the baby of the family, Joy was all about her social media apps. She lived for them, talking about everything from make-up to the latest trends. To make matters worse, she had a cult following and thought she was fucking famous.
The girl was a pain in the ass, but I loved her as did Balthazar…from afar. She was also my only sister that took after Dad. With long dark brown hair and the familiar Miller silver-blue eyes, Joy was hands down trouble with a capital T.
“Brother, you have to help me. She’s only been here for an hour and she’s already caused Faith to seek shelter in her greenhouse. Charity has taken off with Nevil the Geek. Hope is trying to be nice, but I can see the tension radiating off her and I’m not gonna mention what that brat said to Joan!”
“Who’s Joan?”
“Never you mind! Help me!”
Balthazar laughed. “Come on, Zeke. They are only girls. How bad can they be?”
“Are you kidding me!”
“Well, help is on the way. Ari and the girls will arrive in two days.”
“What?” I asked, unsure I heard him correctly. “What do you mean?”
“Zeke,” my brother groaned. “We talked about this the other day. I’m sending you, Ari and the girls until the shit here settles down.”
Holy fuck.
I was about to be surrounded by a sea of estrogen.
Fuck. My. Life!
“Look, if it gets too bad, I’m sure Kansas will let you stay at the clubhouse.”
“Are you trying to get me killed?!” I shouted into the phone. “Every one of those damn Diamondbacks wants my head on a spike.”
“How’s the voices?” my brother asked, changing the subject.
“Fuck if I know. I’ve been too damn busy dealing with sister shit!”
“So, no episodes?”
“No,” I muttered, sitting down on my bed. “Not lately.”
“That’s good, man.”
“Balthazar,” I groaned. “You can’t do this to me. I’m your brother. Your only brother left. These women will kill me faster than the Diamondbacks. Hell, I’ll turn myself into them before I walk back out there and listen to their shit. Come on, man. Don’t leave me hanging like this.”
Balthazar laughed.
Knowing I wasn’t going to get any help from him, I hung up on his ass. Sitting there in my room, I tried to soak in the silence before all hell broke loose. I knew it was coming. With my sisters all under the same roof, it was inevitable.
I now understood why Dad was so exhausted when he returned home to the clubhouse. It was because his daughters drove him fucking crazy!
The bedroom door opened as Joan walked in.
Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and sighed. “You okay?”
I shook my head.
That was all I could do.
