Kansas hung his head. “Shadow’s only confirming what Jinx thought.”

“And what’s that?” Lips asked.

Kansas looked at me and I nodded as he said, “That one of my officers is behind the club massacre five years ago.”

It was close to five in the morning when Kansas told everyone to go home.

“Shadow, hold up,” Kansas said, as everyone left the dining room.

It was a long meeting, and I needed to get back before everyone woke up. Sitting back down, I sat there looking about the large room. It was a nice place. A bit too much for me, but then again, I never really needed much.

I wondered what my Angel would like. Would she want a big house like this or something smaller?

That stopped me short.

She wasn’t my Angel.

Hell, I barely knew the woman. Plus, there was no way she was ready for a relationship right now. Not that I would even know how to go about starting one. I’ve never been in a relationship. Yeah, I’ve fucked women before, but never found one that piqued my interest. Never actually gave a thought to having a relationship.

In my line of work, relationships were nothing but a deterrent. A hindrance that could get everyone killed. So, I stayed away from forming any attachments. I had my brother and his family. My club brothers were fun to hang out with, but that was it.

I never got close to anyone.

“Thank you for staying,” Kansas said, walking back into the dining room, sitting in a chair beside me. “I know tonight wasn’t easy, and I wanted to apologize for what the club brothers said.”

“It’s alright. I expected it.”

“Doesn’t make it right, Shadow.”

Curious, I asked, “Why are you nice to me, Kansas? You, of all people, should want me dead. I killed your woman’s brother. A Diamondback brother.”

Kansas nodded. “You’re right. I should, but for some reason, I don’t. Let’s just call it one of life’s great mysteries.”

He was lying through his teeth and he knew I knew he was.

Sitting back, I asked, “What do you want now?”

“Detective Harris stopped by the clubhouse today. He told me what happened with Ms. Trinity. He also told me you took her home.”

“She needed a safe place to stay.”

“Is that all?”

“What are you suggesting, Kansas?”

“Nothing,” he said, staring at me blankly. “How’s her case going?”

“Jinx was thorough. It won’t take me long to find the fucker.”

“Gonna turn him in?” Kansas smirked.

“Haven’t decided yet.”

“You still taking your meds?”

“Only when I have to.”

“How are you sleeping at night?”
