As if the sanctimonious man would listen to me.

“We’re set,” Dar said as the pilot made the final approach, touching down moments later. Within seconds, the soldiers were on their feet, ready to protect us at all costs.

After they’d left, I glanced at Dar. “This could be the beginning of the end.”

“While you’re one morbid son of a bitch, why do you think Mattia didn’t attend the meeting with us today?”

“Cunning and clever. I never gave you enough credit.” We needed someone to take over in case of tragedy.

“No, you didn’t. Maybe it’s time you did.” He grinned as he pulled out his weapon the same time I did.

Maybe we were more alike than we cared to admit.

As we moved toward the front of the plane, I had the urge to contact Joy. While others might consider her my greatest weakness, I knew otherwise.

The woman I’d fallen in love with had become my greatest strength.

CHAPTER 25

Joy

Panic.

I’d never had a panic attack in my life. I was almost at the point of hyperventilating. I rushed from the dressing room, trying to find my purse.

“What is wrong?” Lucia said as she rose to her feet.

“It’s about to happen.”

“What is about to happen?”

“His death. D’Artagnan’s death. Enzo’s death. I can feel it. I can see it.” I realized I was becoming hysterical, but I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think clearly other than being able to get Enzo on the phone.

“Hold on. Another premonition?” Her expression darkened.

“The images are very clear.” They were usually fuzzy, more like a recurring nightmare than a telling of the future.

Lucia paled. “Let me grab Anthony. Remember, they might be in the air but try and warn him if you can reach him on the phone.”

“Be careful.”

The last thing I needed to do was to upset her. I grabbed my purse, fighting with the clasp before I was able to wrap my hand around the cellphone Enzo had purchased. My hands were shaking so badly, precious seconds flew by. When I finally managed to make the call, a fog had formed around my eyes.

The call went immediately to voicemail and I almost tossed the phone. “Call me. I just need to hear your voice. I think you’re about to be ambushed.”

What else could I say to the powerful man? Maybe he’d think my concerns were unfounded given his position and experience, but the nagging continued.

Both Anthony and Lucia returned to the store, the gruff man taking long strides in my direction. “What do you know?” he barked, already scanning the establishment as if we were the ones under attack.

“I don’t know anything, Anthony. I have these visions that almost always come true.”

Now he looked at me as if I was out of my mind. A smile curled on his lips and he visibly relaxed. “You’re kidding me, right?”

“No, I’m not.”

He cursed in Italian and Lucia seemed furious. “Don’t give her any shit, Anthony. I’ve known Joy a long time and when she has these visions, people die. Do you hear what I’m saying?”

His response was little more than a guttural grunt. It was obvious he didn’t believe the crazy chick from America had the pulse of a mafia family.
