Just like his mind.
“If you dare try and remove me from this location, I will scream bloody murder until someone either detains you and your merry little men or hands me a scalpel so I can carve you into tiny pieces. From what your sister has told me, you couldn’t care less about her well-being. That’s not the case here. I will remain to find out if she’s going to be alright. Period.” When he cocked his head, every vein standing proud in his neck, his jaw so tightly clenched I was certain his teeth would be ground to dust, I smiled just like my mother taught me how to do. “Try it, buster. You have no idea what kind of woman I am.”
There was a fire building between us that I knew would eventually explode, the heated air surrounding us suffocating. If he thought I was a weak girl, he better get his shit together.
No one fucked with the people I cared about.
CHAPTER 4
Enzo
I wanted to strip the fiery woman bare and fuck her up against the wall, driving my cock so deep inside that she’d scream my name instead of crying for the police. My thoughts were primal as well as ridiculous, but the lady had confronted the wrong man.
As Anthony crowded my space in an attempt to protect me against her, I waved him off. This beautiful, contentious vixen I would handle my way.
“You can stay until we know something. Then you will be taken home.” I turned abruptly before I acted on my raging desires, yet her deep chuckle continued to fuel the fire between us.
“Such a big man. Aren’t you?”
Exhaling, I fisted my hands, doing everything I could to keep my anger in check. No one had dared talk to me the way Joy had.
I moved to the other side of the room, scanning the outside for any sign of the police. They’d arrive soon enough. There’d been too many important wives of dignitaries and wealthy businessmen inside the restaurant. The authorities would need to be handled delicately.
“What’s the report from the facility?” I asked Anthony.
“A few injured but no deaths,” he answered. “And no identification on the bodies of the two men.”
I knew there wouldn’t be, but I had all the evidence I needed. “I want you to have two men go deep into Bratva territory asking questions.”
“Not meaning to disrespect you, but isn’t that risky?”
“Absolutely, but necessary. Then I want you to check the guest list. Someone had a connection to the motherfuckers.”
Anthony whistled. “That will take time.”
I turned my head, staring at him. “Time is what we have right now. It needs to be done and prior to D’Artagnan making an appearance.” I studied Joy as she paced the hospital floor, every few seconds darting a look in my direction. What was it about the woman that aroused me so completely?
“And her?” My Capo seemed to notice I was watching her.
“She stays. For now. Then she’ll be taken home.” What I did with her after that was yet to be determined.
“Okay, boss. I’ll see what I can find.”
“We will find the people responsible for this.” He knew me well enough to realize I’d burn the city down to find answers.
Then I’d kill every single person involved.
“Yes, we will.”
I nodded, now wishing I’d brought additional soldiers on the trip. If any news was found by investigating Brighton Beach, then a war would be initiated. The area was crawling with Russians, the old culture taking full control. They didn’t like visitors, especially Italians. Anthony was right in that by asking questions, additional lives could be placed in danger.
Including the striking redhead with the caustic mouth.
I glanced at my watch, checking the time. It was possible D’Artagnan would arrive just after nightfall.
Then blood would rain in the streets.
