“Who gave the order?” Gabe asks.
“That would also be Rumel. He wanted intel on this human woman who’d captured his son’s attention.”
“Who has read the file?” I demand.
“All the Watchers,” Turek tells me, and I feel like I’m going to throw up. “Charlotte, it wasn’t in your background report that you’re a world class sprinter. I mean, I knew you ran anywhere from a ten-to eleven-minute mile, but that was impressive.”
Gabe and I both give him a look. “Alrighty, I’m just gonna head on outta here. Charlotte, I look forward to when we can go head-to-head in the future,” he says, tapping his temple with his fingers.
“That’s assuming you can keep your head,” I say crossly.
“Good point. I’m wearing a reinforced turtleneck next time.”
“Tell Rumel I want a meeting,” Gabe says, his arms crossed, his eyes hard.
“Ah man, now I’m the messenger angel?” he groans.
“Goodbye Turek,” I say as I close and lock the door behind him.
Chapter 33
Charlotte
“Tell me I’m wrong, and you didn’t know everything about me before we were together,” I beg Gabe. “Tell me you’d never betray my privacy and trust like that.”
“Charlotte, let me explain—”
“Then you can’t tell me I’m wrong,” I whisper, tears streaming down my face. It feels like my world’s being tilted on its axis, and everything I thought I knew was a lie. “Goodbye, Gabe,” I say as I stomp over to the door and open it, motioning for him to leave. I’d rather him see me pissed off than broken, and I’m on the verge of an epic breakdown.
“No, ma’am. I’m not going anywhere until you hear me out. Then I’ll leave if that’s what you wish.” He uses his power and the door closes by itself. He takes a seat on the couch. “When we first started spending time together, Rumel told me your middle name. Yes, that is why I gave you the jasmine flowers. He also tried to give me your background report, but I refused to take it.”
“Why did he run a background check on me?”
“Like your dad did on me?” he counters.
“Don’t change the subject,” I snap, even though it’s a valid point.
“That’s just Rumel. He assesses every situation in a methodical and computer-like way.”
“But how did he even know about me?”
“He has a mirror that allows him to see any human. I’m sure he saw us together and that’s why he wanted more information about you.”
“What do you mean? Like a magic spy mirror?”
“Yes, that’s exactly what I mean.”
That’s beyond disturbing, but one problem at a time. “So Rumel spied on us, broke into my therapist’s office to steal a copy of my file, and yet I’m to believe he went to all that trouble and only told you my middle name?”
“Well, no. He left your complete background report at my office, as well as your dad’s.”
I walk over and open the door. “Bye.”
He closes the door again using his power, and I grit my teeth. I’m learning it’s very difficult to kick out a demigod. “Charlotte, I only read the police report, and then destroyed your file. I never even opened your dad’s file. I swear to you on my sister’s grave I never read your therapist’s notes. I had no idea those were even in the file. Had I known, I still would never have read them. My love, you have to believe me.”
“Am I your love, or am I your game? Are Rumel and the Watchers all spying on us right now?” I ask, horrified.
“No, and that is why I warded your apartment and this house. Well, one of many reasons why I warded your apartment and this house.”
