“I haven’t heard, but that sexy incubus is always in the know,” he says wistfully.
“How is Zazel always in the know?”
“The mystique of Zazel.”
“Before I forget, the preliminary report came back with the test results of your clothes. Dark magic was detected. Have you considered that an angel took your scythe? Word is a Dominions is looking for the former Angel of Occult Magic Augustus. Maybe the two cases are related?”
“Sorry to put a damper on your grand reveal, but I don’t know Augustus, nor could I think of a reason why another angel would want my scythe.”
“What about your grand reveal? Which house?” I ask as I finish my drink.
“The dramatic wind has been taken out of my sails,” he laments. “I’m waiting for the perfect time to announce.”
“You haven’t crossed any witches who’d want to steal your scythe?” I think, tapping my fingers on the table.
“Should I move you to the top of the suspect list?”
“Luckily for me, I have a Cambion alibi.”
“And I’m still jealous of that fact,” he says, finishing off his whiskey.
“Could a witch control an angel to make him do her bidding?” My ex, Todd, tried to control a demon, and that didn’t work out well for him. But I do wonder if like demons, angels have certain weaknesses.
“I’ve got my eyes on you,” he says, moving his two fingers between his eyes and mine.
“I’m just curious. And please don’t tell me you have a jar of creepy eyeballs.” I shudder.
“Could a witch control an angel?” He considers. “Maybe. But it would have to be a very powerful witch, and she would have to be in possession of an object of power binding the angel to herself. Most dark arts practitioners deal exclusively with demons and wouldn’t go to the trouble in the first place.”
“Why?”
“Because demons are already kicked out of the heavenly realm, so they’re much more open to wheeling and dealing with humans. What do they have to lose? Angels, now they do have more to lose. Like Eiael going rogue. That was big news because something like that rarely happens.”
“What will happen if Metratron finds out your scythe was stolen?”
“He’s not going to find out. I’ve already been written up once. Jeez, you snatch one wrong soul and it’s the freakin’ end of the world.” It certainly was for that wrong soul, but I don’t dare tell him that as he escorts me back home.
Crawling into bed, I grab Mama’s book of shadows and flip through. There’s still a few spells left to decode. Turning to the next spell, I grab my notepad and pen and get to work.
Finishing the spell’s English translation, I’m horrified by what I’ve written.
Necromancy spell
A burnt sacrifice and bloody altar are absolutely necessary to command the dead. Proper planetary alignment is also crucial for success, as is the ritual’s location. A forest or crossroads is best. Bury all ashes deep in the ground.
So you can’t ward death out, but you can command it? I close the book shut with a loud thump.
Chapter 22
Damion’s birthday is coming up in two days, and in typical Damion fashion, he’s already given me a list of demands.
Damion: You will make me a devil’s food cake for my birthday. Not Amelia.
Agree with him on that one.
Damon: And I want vanilla ice cream.
I add vanilla ice cream to my list with a smile.
