The three of them collapsed onto the bed together, with Jules in the middle, and God, it felt right to be between the two of them. She never imagined that she’d end up with two men, but now, she couldn’t imagine anything else. Lucky and Zan had ruined her for all other men, in just one night together. There was no going back to her old existence now, not even if she wanted to.
Lucky
Lucky woke up with Jules pressed against his body and felt content for the first time in his entire life. He thought about staying just like that—in bed with her tangled up with his body until he realized that Zan was missing. He got out of bed and wandered into the little sitting room, following the sound of the television.
“You can’t sleep either?” Zan asked.
“Oh, I was sleeping just fine until I realized you were missing. What’s up?” Lucky asked. He knew Zan well enough to know that something was bothering him. He was an over-thinker and if he was right, Zan was definitely over thinking what had just happened between the three of them.
“I’m worried that I’m a third wheel in all of this, man,” Zan admitted.
“I thought that Jules already covered that. She wants both of us. I’m betting that she doesn’t let anyone in easily. She let you in, Zan, and you should be on your fucking knees thanking the powers that be for your good fortune. I can tell you; I worked my ass off to get to where I am with Jules and you two just seem to click for some reason. Maybe I’m the one who should be sitting out here, worrying about being a third wheel.”
“That’s bullshit,” Zan insisted. “Jules is in love with you and if you can’t see that, you’re a blind man. I saw the way that she looks at you.”
“She looked at you the same way, Zan. Maybe you’re the blind man if you didn’t see it. Don’t fuck this all up by overthinking everything. She wants both of us and I say, we let her have her way with us.” Lucky bobbed his eyebrows at his friend and sunk onto the sofa next to him. “Would ground rules make you feel any better?”
“I have no clue,” Zan admitted. “I mean, probably, but I just don’t know. What were you thinking?”
“How about the three of us agree to be completely honest with each other? It’s the only way that this will work. You and I need to be able to communicate if we’re going to take care of Jules together. If you have some deep dark secret, now’s the time to spill it.”
“I’m an open book. And I think that we did a pretty good job of communicating tonight, man,” Zan said. He was right, they had. It was almost as though they could read each other’s minds, knowing the other’s next move, and anticipating Jules’s every need.
“We did do a good job, man,” Lucky agreed. “We also need to stop the negative talk—like this third-wheel shit. If you are feeling insecure, we need to squash it.”
“Easier said than done. You do know that sooner or later, one of us is going to get jealous of the other, right?” Zan asked.
Lucky shrugged, “Maybe if we let that happen, but we won’t. Jules doesn’t deserve our jealousy and all that other bullshit. She deserves our best.”
“You really do love her, don’t you, man?” Zan asked.
“I’ve been in love with her for half a year now,” Lucky admitted. “I won’t lie, I never imagined that Jules would want to add a third or anything like this would happen, but I’m not mad about it. In my line of work, you never know what tomorrow might hold. If something happens to me, it’s nice to know that Jules will have you to take care of her.”
“I agree—that is a bonus. Listen, I’m right there with you, so I get the dangerous aspect of our lives, but is sharing a woman something that we can do?” Zan asked.
“It is because I don’t want to think about the alternative. I can’t lose her again. I won’t. If she needs both of us, then that’s what we’ll give her. I love her too much not to give her what she wants, man.”
“What about the future—what happens when we want to get married or have kids?” Zan asked.
“Well, I know that Jules’s brother, Gabe, is in a poly relationship. They have kids and are married. They make it work. They had a commitment ceremony and have made sure that if anything happens to any of them, the others left in the relationship are taken care of. We can do something like that.”
“What about the kids? Will it matter which one of us is their father?” Zan asked.
“Not to me,” Lucky admitted. “I’m good with both of us being the kid’s father if you are.”
Zan shrugged, “It’s a lot to think about, man,” he said.
“It is, but I need to know now, Zan—are you in or are you out?” Lucky asked.
Zan sighed, “I’m in,” he said. “Like you, I don’t want to lose Jules. I know that we just met, but I feel this strange connection to her. It felt right being with her—you know the two of us. I can’t explain it, but it’s just right.” Lucky agreed, it did feel right and with any luck, Jules would think so too.
“Listen, don’t say anything to Jules about us talking tonight. She’ll kick our asses for not waking her up to be a part of the conversation. Plus, she’ll freak out if we tell her that we talked about kids and marriage. I don’t think that she’s ready to have that conversation yet,” Lucky said. It had taken him half a year just to get her to agree to give him a chance. He had to fucking kidnap her to get her into bed with him. If she knew that they were talking about the future that they wanted to have with her, Jules would kick them both to the curb.
“Deal,” Zan agreed. “She’s as tough as they come, isn’t she?” he asked.
“You have no idea, but you’ll figure it out. You’re about to get a crash course in Jules Leone and God help both of us man, she’s a beast. She’s worth it, man, but she’s going to give us a run for our money.” Lucky knew that Jules would give them trouble at every turn, but it was one of the things that he loved most about her. Jules was worth all the trouble she would throw their way, and so much more.
