“Ow!” Kenzie groans.
“Oh, shit.”
“What the hell are you doing?” Kenzie laughs at the sight of me. Completely naked, sheet on the floor, and a spoon between us.
“I thought you were a murderer!” I exclaim.
“And you were saving yourself with a wooden spoon?!” Kenzie starts laughing hysterically.
“It was the first thing I grabbed!”
“Well, anyway, I got bagels.”
“That’s where you went?” I ask. Duh, she wasn’t leaving me alone. She was just out getting us food.
“Yeah, I thought we could have breakfast before you go to work.”
“Oh, shit! Work! What time is it!?”
“It’s just after seven a.m.”
“I have an hour before I need to be there, and I have nothing to wear.” I’m never this unprepared for work. This is going to be terrible. I can’t go into my office wearing shorts and a T-shirt that I wore last night.
“I thought you might say that.” Kenzie smiles and takes out her phone.
“What did you do?” I raise an eyebrow.
“I called your assistant when you fell asleep last night and asked her to grab you an outfit and meet you at the Starbucks that’s a block away from your office. She’ll be waiting for you. I knew you wouldn’t want to stay in your clothes from yesterday, and it’s too far to head home first,” Kenzie explains.
“Really?” I ask. That was so fucking thoughtful and surprising of her.
“She’ll be there at 8:45 a.m. with your outfit. She said she had to bribe your doorman but he let her into your apartment because she has the key.” Kenzie shrugs.
“You really are amazing.” I smile. Such a small gesture is going to make my day a million times better than I originally thought.
“Now, come have a bagel with me.” A huge grin spreads across her face.
“I wish I could, but I really do have to go. I don’t want to be late; I have an important meeting today.” I head back into the bedroom to get dressed.
“Take one to go, then?”
“Yes, please.”
“Good. I stopped by your favorite bagel place.”
“How did you know my favorite bagel place?” I furrow my eyebrows together and look up at her as I slide on my shorts.
“I might have stalked your Instagram and found when you posted about them.” She shrugs like it’s not a thoughtful thing to do.
“Thank you.” I smile.
“I’ll butter one up for you and you can take it with you.”
“Sounds perfect.” I press my lips to hers, and I feel a warm sense of security when I do.
She smiles and heads to the kitchen while I look for my shirt. It’s tossed aside, and I throw it on easily while I watch Kenzie in the kitchen. The idea of this being our life pops into my head. Could we really work? No, she’s only here for a week, and last time we attempted long distance, it fizzled out right in front of us. I don’t want to put myself through that again. I just need to enjoy this for what it is—a fling.
“Here you go, have a great day at work.” She kisses my cheek, and I pull her in for a deeper kiss.
