With a sigh, she reached across the bed and grabbed her phone.

Holy shit! It was nine freaking thirty! She had an open house in an hour!

Shit, shit, shit.

The next forty-five minutes were a blur of showering, insulin, eating, and getting her ass out of the house. She had to take both long and short-acting insulin daily. The short-acting, NovoLog, was for eating and adjusting highs and lows. The long-acting insulin, Levemir, she took every twelve hours to help keep her leveled.

And as Erik had said, sometimes it all felt like a lot. Well, no, not sometimes—a lot of the time. Especially when she was in a rush.

At leastbecauseshe was in such a rush, and had to focus on so much else, she didn’t let herself freak out when she stepped into her own house to grab what she needed for the day.

Most people would just be able to call in sick after someone broke into their house and attacked them. Not her. Not if she wanted to make a sale and earn some commission. Taylor or James would no doubt help her if she asked, but she knew they both had their own open houses today.

She’d just jumped into her car when she sent a text to Erik.

Hannah: I’m out. You can lock up now.

Erik: Thanks. I hope your morning was okay. I forgot to write in the note that the guy who broke in was a confirmed small-time criminal. Now that he’s dead, you’re safe.

A tightness she hadn’t realized she’d been holding released from her chest. She’d expected the attack to be random, because why would anyone target her? But still…having it confirmed was a comfort.

Hannah: Thank you, Erik. That’s a relief.

She made a quick stop at the office, then got to the first house with minutes to spare. She had two open houses today, both lasting three hours each.

The first went fairly quickly, with a slow trickle of people coming through. There were a few promising buyers, which almost helped her forget the night before.

The second open was another at Angelo’s home. And when two hours had passed and she’d had no one come through, nerves began to trickle down her spine. The place was expensive, so in a small town, she hadn’t expected a huge number of people. Butnoone?

Give it time, Hannah. This is only the second open house, and there’s still an hour left.

But thirty minutes later, there was still no one. She’d been nervously fiddling with her bracelet for fifteen minutes when a silver Ferrari pulled up outside.

No…it couldn’t be—

Marco climbed out of the driver’s seat.

Crap. What was he doing here? Was he here to see her? But how did he even know she’d be here?

She met him on the porch, where he leaned down and kissed her cheek, and she was so damn shocked she just stood there.

“Cara, it is nice to see you.”

“Marco, what are you doing here?”

Humor danced in his eyes. “I’m here to view the house.”

“You’re looking to buy a house?”

“I have a wide portfolio and am always looking to expand.”

She swallowed. She’d promised Erik she wouldn’t go near the guy, but this was her job, and she couldn’t very well send him away.

She forced a smile to her face. “Well, it’s nice to see you again.” She handed him a pamphlet. “Have a look at this, and if you have any questions—”

“Actually, if you have the time, I would love a tour.”

It wasn’t like she had anyone else here. “Sure.”
