“Well then,” I patted Kelly’s knee as she was still lying on the ground, “let’s go.”

That night, Kelly and I were in my room getting ready. I still had boxes all over the place, but I had set up my mirror at the head of my bed, plus my room had more space than hers, anyway.

“Are you sure you’re up to this?” I double-checked with her as I sat on the bed. “I know it’s been a long day.”

“No, I’m actually excited.” She looked over at me with a smile as she touched up her mascara. “It’s been a while since I’ve had fun, I’ve been working so much. Besides, it’ll be like a fresh start. That’s what you said, right?”

“Well, yeah, but I was being a little dramatic.” I chuckled. “Are you almost ready?”

“Oh, yeah. I’m just messing around now.” She shrugged and closed her mascara tube, setting it in her bag. “I can put all my shit in your purse, right?”

“Always!” I nodded and held out my small black bag.

She tossed in her lipstick and her phone, then I put mine in there as well. She was wearing jeans with pockets, but she liked the clean lines she got with skinny jeans, so she opted to put things in my purse whenever possible. She was one of those girls that always looked casual and cool, and tonight, she just had on a black tank top with her light wash denim. Somehow, she never seemed underdressed for anything.

On the contrary, I was the one who seemed overdressed in my dark turquoise satin tank with a matching short skirt. I’d double checked with Torie before they left earlier, and she’d sworn that it was going to look perfect, so I trusted her.

“Okay, let’s go!” Kelly grabbed her keys and started heading for the back door.

As we went down the stairs, I found myself getting a little nervous, halfway anticipating that Helen would step out and tell us some more creepy shit. Thankfully, she did not. We made our way to Kelly’s car, and I relaxed significantly once we were inside.

“Are you sure you want to drive?” I double-checked. “We can Uber so you can actually have fun.”

“Oh, I’m gonna have fun.” She smirked as she started the car and pulled out of the spot. “I’m going to get sufficiently drunk, then we’re gonna make Mica drive us home.”

I laughed and gave her a look. “You don’t think he’ll be too hammered?”

“No way.” She shrugged. “He doesn’t drink.”

“No, but he smokes like a fucking chimney,” I reminded her.

“True… Oh, well.” She shrugged. “Worse comes to worst, we crash at their place.”

“And maybe you crash in Mica’s bed?” I poked her arm.

“Ah! Hey! Shut up!” She huffed, swatting my hand. “I told you, we’re just going to see what happens!”

I groaned and dropped my head back. “Are you ever gonna make a move?”

Kelly rolled her eyes. “I want him to make a fucking move.”

I smiled. “Kels, he might not even know you like him.”

“No, but that’s the point!” she whined. “I want him to like me so much that he hits on me, anyway! Then we can fall in love or whatever.”

“Solid plan.” I laughed.

“It’s just weird!” she argued. “I’ve known him for years. When we first met, we were both dating people. Then he broke up with his girlfriend, but by the time I dumped Mitchell, he already had a new girlfriend. Then they didn’t break up until after he graduated, at which point it would have been stupid to hit on him since he lived a million miles away. Now I’m worried it’ll be weird. Like, ‘oh, she’s just hitting on me because she’s in the city and doesn’t know anyone else.’”

“I don’t think he’d think that,” I assured her.

“Well, I guess we’ll see,” she huffed.

After a few minutes of driving, I leaned forward, looking down the street. “Is this it?”

“Umm… Yes!” she confirmed. “Let’s find street parking.”
