“No, he isn’t; he doesn’t like me for some reason. He loves Nash and Faith, but he hates me!” It was hard to believe because Patrick was such a nice person. I had known him my whole life, and he loved to play with me or Remy when he came over to visit my father. He never seemed like a bad father to me.

“But he is your father. Fathers love their children.”

This only made him sob even more; maybe I shouldn’t have said that.

I hugged him again, and we both fell to the side of his bed, but I didn’t let go of him, and he didn’t let go of me either as he finally allowed himself to hug me back.

“My daddy loves you, Kayden. You don’t need Patrick when you have mine.” My father loved him like his own son, and he was the best father in the world.

“He loves me?” Kayden asked, rubbing his tears off his cheeks with his already wet cuffs. I nod.

“He loves you, and my mommy loves you… Oh! And of course! I love you; you are my best friend.”

We laid next to each other on his bed, and Kayden’s eyes softened with every minute that passed. “You will never leave me?” he asked after I pulled his blanket over us.

I shook my head and looked down at my necklace, which I got from Mommy a few hours ago. The forget-me-not flower looked magical in the dim light. I sat up slowly and looked down at Kayden.

“Can you help me take this off?” I asked him and pointed at my necklace.

He sat up too and nodded before I turned around. A second later, the necklace fell into my hand.

“Turn around,” I commanded, and he did what I said without question. I put the necklace around his neck.

“What is that?” Kayden asked.

“A forget-me-not flower. When you give it to a person, it means you truly love them, and you, and they will never forget each other.”

He looked down at the pendant around his neck.

“Why did you give this to me, Tillie?” my best friend asked softly, and I smiled.

“Because this is my promise to never leave you and always love you, Kayden Kidd.”

His gaze softened, and he took my hand in his.

“I promise to never leave you and forever love you too, Matilda Avril.”

I grinned and jumped off his bed to put our favorite CD on.

When the first song started, I pulled Kayden off his bed, and he laughed. “What are you doing?”

“We are going to have our own party tonight; we don’t need other people when we have us,” I said and ran back over to his bed, pulling him off by the hands, and he let out a laugh.

We have never ever broken our promises; we are forever, Kayden Kidd.

You’re on Your Own, Kid.

Yeah, you can face this

You’re on your own, kid

You always have been”
