She looked at the driver who stepped aside. Then to me and whispered, “I thought you didn’t cook.”
I shook my head. “But I can feed you.”
The door of the office opened and out came a few of her staff members. One notably in front was the little receptionist. She held her camera up, snapping away.
“Guess we better go before you end up all over the internet.” Gigi watched over her shoulder.
“For you, It won’t even matter.”
She scoffed. “Okay.”
The driver, Mr. Watson I learned as she said his name, held the door open while we stepped inside. “You didn’t want to drive to pick me up?”
“Maybe…” I hesitated, “my mama was right.”
Laughing, she eyed me. “I certainly appreciate the effort.”
I wanted to tell her to wait until we pulled up to my house. But I couldn’t spoil the surprise. Instead, I tossed out random questions. “How was your day?”
“It was alright,” she said, “Patients lying about flossing. As always.”
I laughed. “Still a sticking point, huh?”
She nodded. “Will always be.”
As Mr. Watson pulled into my driveway, I told him, “I got this one. Thanks, Mr. Watson.” I stepped out of the car and opened her door. I reached for her hand and said, “Now close your eyes.”
I opened the door and waited until I had her positioned in front of the rose wall. “Now open.”
She gasped and I felt a little flutter in my stomach. “This is beautiful.” Her hand covered her face. “I don’t even know what to say.” She looked down at her pants and white shirt. “I’m underdressed for whatever this is.”
I winked. “Don’t worry, I got you.” I reached for her hand and when our fingers connected, my entire body eased. I looked down at her to see if hers did too, but the wide smile she was rocking was all the confirmation I needed.
In the guest room, I set up the bags from the mall. Telling her, “Here, I grabbed a few things for you. Not for tonight specifically, but why wait, right?”
She hesitated. “Angelo—”
I held up a red dress. “I hope this fits.” I held it out until she let it drape across her arm. “The bathroom is that way.”
She blinked before walking toward it. I sat at the edge of the bed waiting for her to come back out. I could hear her before I could see her. “It’s a little tight.”
And I saw nothing wrong with that when she stepped into the room. “Damn.” I wiped my hand across my beard. “It looks good on you.”
“I just…” she looked down to her bare feet. “You thought I only wanted you for your status. And now you are doing all this. If it changes anything, won’t that only prove you right?”
It wasn’t something that crossed my mind. After my mama corrected me about Gigi, the idea of her wanting nothing more than me was the only thing I considered. “You aren’t that person. And I apologize again for saying that. For thinking it. If you do decide to give me a chance after tonight, I’ll be thankful. If not, I’ll take it up a notch.”
I could see her mind grinding. Her eyes flickered to mine then to the ground again. It wasn’t like her to be speechless. Not hearing her thoughts had me on edge.
“Can I show you the house?”
“I’d like that.” Her smile returned and again, the flutter in my stomach took a break.
“It has everything I need. A few bedrooms for my family when they visit.” I pointed to the room across from where her bags were setup. “This kitchen for whenever I learn to cook.” Then, “This bomb ass primary bedroom.”
“And that.” She pointed toward the door. “What’s out there?”
“Oh.” I walked her over to it. “That’s what sold me. This infinity pool.”
