The room is quiet, the only sound is the soft hum of the air conditioning. I pause to take in my surroundings again. The office is impressive, and it offers a stunning view of the city skyline. Mr. Slater gives off an air of quiet competence while at the same time exuding a sense of assurance and authority. It’s clear he’s worked hard to get where he is. I feel a sense of excitement at the thought of working in such an energetic environment.
As I gaze out the window, I already feel a deep sense of connection to this place. I know I belong here, and I hope he feels the same way.
“Well, Ms. Mitchell, I’m suitably impressed with your credentials and I believe you’ll fit right in at Chase Media. I’d like to offer you the position, and I’d like you to start immediately. Today, if possible.”
His words break me out of my reverie, and my eyes immediately dart back to him. “Wait, what? Today?” I repeat.
He laughs. “Yes, today, if you’re available that is. I realize it’s sudden, but the CEO’s last assistant left rather abruptly, and we need to get someone onboard as soon as possible. So… can you start today?”
“Yes, I am available,” I reply.
“Great! Let’s talk terms.” He turns to his computer and punches a few keys before turning back to me and handing me a file. “In this folder, you’ll find all the details of your job, salary, and information on the benefits we offer. I’ll give you a minute to go over everything while I grab your offer letter from the printer.”
I smile at him before taking the folder. I open it as he walks through the office door. My jaw drops to the floor when I see the salary. It’s almost twice as much as I was making at Digiprint. The benefits are also extraordinary—full insurance, retirement plan, meal allowance, travel allowance, gym membership—just to name a few.
Once he returns, he asks, “How does everything look?”
“It’s very generous. Thank you.”
“I’ll just need you to sign the offer letter, and we’ll get you settled in.” He hands me the freshly printed document.
I read through it, concerned that I may be overlooking something. This is an important position at a major media company, but the total compensation seems almosttoogenerous. It makes me think there has to be some sort of catch or something he isn’t telling me. But if there is, there’s no sign of it in the offer letter.
Satisfied that all is in good order, I sign the letter and hand it back to him.
“Later on, you’ll need to go down to HR to complete the full employment paperwork. However, in the meantime, let me be the first to officially welcome you to Chase Media, Ms. Mitchell,” he says with a smile.
“Thank you, Mr. Slater. I’m delighted to come on board and please, call me Jocelyn.”
“Alright, Jocelyn. I’ll take you to your office so you can get settled in and also introduce you to your new boss.” He then stands up from his chair.
I sling my purse over my shoulder and follow him out of his office.
Walking through the hallway, I begin to feel the jitters of a first day at work. I’m so excited to get the job that it hasn’t fully dawned on me how strange this all is. I know full well it can often take multiple interviews spaced over days or even weeks sometimes to get an offer like this. Yet, he offered me the job on the spot after a very brief interview. What was really going on here? Had I made a mistake signing on so quickly?Time will tell, I think to myself, realizing I’ve got no choice but to see it through now.
Well, at least it’s a paycheck and a damn good one at that. The fact that I won’t have to dip into my savings heartens me though I can’t help but feel nervous as we step into the elevator and ascend to the top floor.
I’ll be working closely with someone completely unknown to me. I’m experiencing a tinge of regret at not doing more research on the company, not that there was much time to do it anyway. The elevator chimes, signaling our arrival on the executive level.
Parker steps out of the elevator and as I follow him, I’m immediately struck by the magnificence of the space. If I thought what I had already seen was impressive, this floor takes it to a whole new level.
The floor-to-ceiling windows provide a breathtaking panoramic view of the city below. Natural light floods the space, illuminating the sleek, modern furnishings that fill the room. The walls are adorned with stunning artwork and sculptures. Each piece seems to be carefully selected to convey a sense of elegance and sophistication. The carpets are plush and soft underfoot, and the air smells faintly of exotic flowers.
As we walk past the impressive boardroom, with its gleaming table and high-tech AV equipment, I marvel at the private offices that line the hallway. Each space is uniquely decorated, reflecting the personality and style of its occupant.
The CEO’s corner office is a sight to behold with its panoramic views, luxurious furnishings, and carefully curated art collection. As I take in the splendor of this impressive executive floor, I feel a sense of awe and wonder at the sheer scale of the operation that I am now a part of.
A woman with a striking head of fiery red hair approaches us. “Good morning, Mr. Slater,” she says with a bright smile.
“Good morning, Clare. How are you today?” he replies.
“I’m very well, thank you. Is this our new employee?” she asks.
“Yes. Clare O’Hara, this is Jocelyn Mitchell,” he says to her. He then turns to me and says, “Jocelyn, this is Clare O’Hara. She is Mr. Chase’s secretary.”
“Very nice to meet you,” I say, extending my arm to shake her proffered hand.
“Glad to have you onboard. I’m sure we’ll be seeing a lot of each other. My office is just right there.” She gestures to one of the offices on either side of the CEO’s.
