She laughs a hysterical, maniacal laugh. This time, there’s no mistaking the rage contorting her features as she pulls a gun out of her purse and points it at me.

Chapter 27

Jocelyn

“Getoutofthecar,” she orders.

“Clare, please. I don’t understand. Why are you doing this?”

“Get out of the car or I will shoot you!”

It’s clear she’s lost it. I see no other choice but to obey her until I can think of a way out of this situation. I quickly scramble out of the car. She follows behind me. She gestures with the gun toward a chair in a corner of the large warehouse.

“Sit down.”

I reluctantly do as she says when I hear a familiar voice approaching from across the room.

“Good, you’ve arrived.”

It’s Henry, one of the board members from Digiprint. As he gets closer, I see that he also has a gun pointed at me.

“Tie her up,” he orders Clare.

Clare puts down her gun, and I briefly think about grabbing it. However, I’m too slow and she begins to wrap a rope tightly around me, pinning me to the chair. She takes my purse, pulls out my cell phone, and switches it off before dropping it on the ground and stomping on it with her heel.

Henry approaches and checks my bonds. “Good, nice and tight. Oh, Jocelyn, after we fired you, you just had to go work for the competition. Not only do you work for them, but you’ve had a significant role in Chase Media’s recent successes. I can’t have you working for our biggest competitor without consequences.”

“But you fired me! What was I supposed to do? Starve?”

“You could have gone to work somewhere else, anywhereelse! I’ve spent years trying to take down Dylan Chase and now that I’ve almost achieved my goal, I won’t let you ruin it.”

“What are you going to do to me? Why are you trying to hurt Dylan?”

“You see, Jocelyn, in order to take Digiprint to the top, Dylan and Chase Media need to go down. As for you, I’m not going to do anything to you. Well, as long as my plan works and Chase’s big launch fails tonight. You see, I know all about your little relationship. With you missing, Dylan won’t be able to focus on anything else and I’ll be able to complete my sabotage with Clare’s help, of course.”

“So that’s it then? You’re just going to let me go?”

“Oh, I didn’t say that, but I’m not personally going to do anything to you.” He then turns to leave.

I turn my head to look at Clare, searching her eyes for any sign of sanity. Unfortunately, I don’t find any.

“Clare, please. Can’t you see this is madness? It’s not too late to stop it. Just let me go and we can work something out.”

“Let you go? And have all this be for nothing? I don’t think so.”

“What did I do to make you hate me so much?”

“What did you do? Are you seriously asking me that, you little bitch?” she shrieks as she steps forward and slaps me hard across the face.

My lip begins to bleed. I instinctively try to push her away before I realize it’s futile because she’s restrained me.

“What is wrong with you?” I scream at her as I try to wipe the blood from my mouth.

“Look who’s talking, you fucking whore!” she shouts and hits me again. “You stole Dylan from me! You thought you could have it all—Dylan, his money, and his power? I spent years making myself invaluable to him, waiting for him to finally notice what an asset I am and give me the position I deserve! And just when I’m about to take my rightful place by his side, you come in and fuck it all up for me! It wasn’t enough for you to take the job I wanted, but you had to have Dylan too! I saw from the start the way you were looking at him, and I knew you’d spread your legs at the first opportunity. I did everything I could to make him fire you like I did with all the others, but I just couldn’t get rid of you!”

“So it’s been you all along? You were behind the sabotage, the messages, and the vandalism?” I realize this is a dumb question, but as long as I can keep her talking, I’ve got a chance.

“Of course, it’s been me, you twit! Haven’t you been listening to anything I’ve said? Dylan belongs to me, and I won’t let you have him! Once I’ve gotten rid of you, he’ll come to me like he was always meant to.”
