Jocelyn stirs beside me. Her eyes flutter open as she senses my distress. She reaches out, gently shaking me, and calling out my name. Slowly, I emerge from the depths of the nightmare. I am gasping for breath as my heart pounds against my chest.
“Dylan! Dylan, wake up! It’s just a dream,” Jocelyn’s voice echoes. Her touch is a soothing balm against the remnants of the nightmare that still linger in my mind.
I blink. My eyes start to adjust to the darkness, and I gradually become aware of Jocelyn’s presence. Her concerned gaze meets mine, and it is filled with compassion and understanding. She pulls me into a comforting embrace. She holds me tightly as if to shield me from the haunting memories that plague my subconscious.
“What happened, Dylan?” she whispers, her voice a gentle reassurance in the stillness of the night.
I take a shaky breath. My voice trembles as I share fragments of my past, pieces of the puzzle that shape who I am. “It was... a nightmare. My fears... I’m afraid of losing you,” I admit, my voice heavy with vulnerability.
“Dylan, it’s okay. You’re safe,” she says soothingly. Her voice is a calm presence in the darkness.
I nod, finding solace in her words and her unwavering presence. With each passing moment, the remnants of the nightmare fade. It is replaced by the warmth and comfort she provides. I feel like the time has come to finally unburden myself.
“It’s just that… I seem to lose everyone I love in tragic circumstances.”
She holds me tighter, her touch a lifeline in the darkness. “You won’t lose me, Dylan. I’m here by your side, and I’m not going anywhere.”
“There’s a lot you don’t know about me, Jocelyn.” I take a deep breath and begin, “I lost my mother to cancer when I was a teenager. It wasn’t just losing her, it was also having to watch her waste away. The pain was almost unbearable. I closed myself off for years. Then I met Erica… You know some of my history with Erica, but there’s more. She didn’t just leave me for someone else, she left me at the altar. After my mother died, she was the first person I was able to let my guard down with and it turns out she never loved me at all.”
“And there’s something else,” I continue, my voice filled with a mix of sorrow and strength. “My father... he was a firefighter. He died in the line of duty while my mother was still pregnant with me. It’s another loss that has haunted me. I’ve always wondered what kind of man I would be if he had been in my life, if he had lived.”
Jocelyn’s eyes well up with tears as her fingers gently trace circles on my back, a show of support and understanding. She draws me closer and whispers, “Dylan, I can’t even imagine what it’s been like for you but I promise, I will always be here for you.”
As we sit there in the hushed embrace of the night, the weight of my past begins to feel lighter, the scars less pronounced. Jocelyn’s presence brings me comfort and healing. It guides me through the shadows of my fears.
I hold her tightly and gently make love to her. She instinctively knows that I need this time to be different. This is more than just sex. This is a true expression of love, reciprocated love, the first I have ever experienced.
We both reach climax and then drift back to sleep. Entwined in each other’s arms, I find solace and peace in the sanctuary of Jocelyn’s love. The nightmares of my past will not define me any longer. With Jocelyn by my side, I will conquer the demons that haunt my soul.
Chapter 24
Jocelyn
Iwakeuptothe soft sunlight streaming through the curtains. The events of the previous night are still fresh in my mind. Dylan stirs beside me, his features relaxed as he sleeps. My heart aches with the desire to protect him from the nightmares that haunt his sleep. However, we have a new day ahead, and we need to deal with the threats and sabotage that are ever-present.
I slip out of bed, careful not to disturb Dylan’s peaceful slumber. In the bathroom, I take a hot shower, trying to shake off the remnants of the night’s unrest. As I towel off, my reflection in the mirror reveals a mixture of determination and worry. We need to uncover the truth and put an end to this menace once and for all.
Heading downstairs, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee fills the air. Dylan, already up and dressed, stands by the kitchen counter with a serious expression. His eyes meet mine, conveying a mixture of gratitude and determination. We both know the weight of the task ahead.
“Morning,” I say, my voice still tinged with sleep.
“Good morning, Jocelyn,” Dylan replies. He pours me a cup of coffee and hands it to me with a smile. “Yesterday, the last few weeks... I’m sorry for everything. I should’ve been there for you.”
I reach out and gently touch his arm. “You’re here now, and we’re in this together, Dylan. We’ll figure it out. We’ll find out who’s behind all of this.”
As he pulls me into his arms and holds me tightly, I’ve never felt safer. After several moments, he releases me and places a kiss on my forehead before going back to the table where his phone is ringing. He answers without looking at the caller ID, and he responds in a hushed tone.
“It’s fine. Just tell me what you need. There are things I can do to make it easier if that will help your investigation,” he says to the caller. “We’ll see you soon.”
Hanging up the phone, he says to me, “That was the head of the private security firm Parker hired. They have a team coming into the office this morning to assess our situation and make recommendations. Grab your things and let’s head over.”
Parker is waiting in the lobby to meet us as we arrive at the office. He waits to speak until we’re in the elevator on the way to the executive floor. “Sorry about that, but I couldn’t risk us being overheard. At this point, we have no idea who the saboteur is, but it has to be an inside job. Only the three of us and the team from Blackwell Security know the real reason why they’re here.”
“People are bound to notice and wonder what’s going on, aren’t they?” I question.
“Yes, Jocelyn. However, to prevent the rumor mill from getting out of control, I sent a company-wide email this morning stating that they are evaluating our office with an eye toward upgrading systems, integrating smart features, and optimizing energy usage for sustainability and efficiency.”
“That’s a good idea, Parker. Let’s actually do that when this ordeal is over,” Dylan says.
