“Why is that funny?” she asked.
“Because you’re hot. Girls like you usually dated the hot, athletic engineering boys.”
This time she laughed. “Leon, please. I said he was a nerd; I didn’t say he wasn’t hot.”
“Hmm, a hot nerd. That’s odd.”
“He was a microbiology student who played volleyball and spent all his extra time reading a lot. He had knowledge on a whole lot of things. It was the most interesting thing ever.”
A pang of jealousy shot through me. Images of her laughing at random facts he would tell her started forming in my mind. I couldn’t believe I was jealous of a guy she dated in college; someone I never knew. I brought this upon myself anyways, I asked her about it.
“So, you like smart boys then?” I asked, trying not to let on any sign that I was jealous.
She nodded and put a spoonful of soup in her mouth. “This tastes delicious.”
I started thinking of ways to show Valentina that I was smart. I knew a lot of things too; she just didn’t know that yet.
“What about you?” she asked and for a minute, I was confused by her question before I remembered the topic of conversation.
“There was really nothing serious in college. Yes, I was in a few relationships but they weren’t really serious. The one time I fell deeply in love was just after college.”
“Tell me about that.”
“It started off great. We met online and spoke there for almost three months; I fell hopelessly in love. She was also into tech and we had a lot in common. Finally, we decided to meet and that was when things went downhill.”
“Why?”
“I was way younger than she’d expected. She said she didn’t want anything to do with someone as young as I was and said I catfished her.”
Valentina was in stitches by the time my sentence was done. “How old were the both of you?”
“She was 33, I was 22.”
She laughed some more till tears gathered in her eyes. I handed her a napkin and watched as she carefully wiped them without smudging her makeup.
“My painful story is funny to you, right?”
“No. The thing is, I am just imagining a young you, excited for love just to get the shock of your life. Also, the expression on your face is hilarious.” She dabbed on her eye again. “Did you know that she was older?”
“I knew. I just didn’t think it was by a lot. She spoke like she was just a year or two older than me. Painful thing is I never lied about how old I was. So, her reaction was really a surprise to me.”
“I’m sorry about that,” she said.
“Your lips say one thing while your face says another,” I said and she laughed. The sound of her laughter was music to my ears.Take that, college nerd. You’ve got nothing on me.
We finished eating and sat there talking until we were done with our bottle of wine. I decided it was time we moved this conversation to my house or someplace else other than this restaurant.
“We should leave.” She said, looking at the time on her phone screen.
“Yeah, I think so too,” I said and got up. One of the men in my security detail helped her up and we walked outside. She smiled at the impact of the fresh air on her skin. Her makeup was still very much intact and she still looked as stunning as she looked earlier.
My phone buzzed in my pocket and I took it out. An unknown number sent me a message. I tapped on the message and it opened. The message read,
“You’re great. But you can’t keep a girl like her.”
I clicked off the message and darted my eyes around us. There was nothing or no one suspicious in sight. Who was this trying to mess with me? I needed to get Valentina out of here. I turned to her.
“I have some very nice tea in my kitchen,” I said and she blushed.
