Maci shrugged and seemed to understand my reasoning. She knew by now how I was with women. We swapped stories and talked about past hookups in some conversations. I knew that she had only slept with five guys; three of them she dated, and two of them were guys she had known since high school. She knew I didn’t even know my number and that I’d never dated anyone.
“Okay, then,” Maci piped up. Her eyes narrowed, and I knew she was about to challenge me on something. “If you saw me out and a guy was chattin’ me up, would you intervene? Or would you and Kennedy be too busy with your hoes?”
“Chattin’ you up, huh?” I laughed. It was always funny to hear her try to talk like me. “While I’m busy with hoes?”
She nodded. She was such a dork.
“Depends. What are you wearing?” I moved a little closer to her, and she smacked me again.
“I don’t care if I’m wearing a hazmat suit or a thong bikini,” Katie exaggerated. “Nobody better intervene if that’s where my night is heading.”
“I better never get cock-blocked by a person in a hazmat suit.” I stood up and walked my bowl to the sink. Katie watched me and made sure I put it in the dishwasher.
Living with females seemed exhausting. Heaven forbid I left the toilet seat up. Maci would reprimand me with, “Ladies live here, Jax. Put that shit back down.”
I leaned over the counter and peered into the living room. “I wouldn’t butt in.” I would love to see Maci in action at the bars. I would’ve totally hit on her if we had met at the bar instead of in a classroom.
“We should all go out!” Maci’s face lit up instantly, and I knew I couldn’t say no.
“You guys don’t have plans for Halloween?” I ran my fingers through my hair. I couldn’t have Maci and Katie with me on Saturday. My guys wouldn’t have it if we were all looking to take a girl home that night.
Bryson and I had plans to rummage through at least a dozen house parties on Saturday. We were going as firemen. Connor and Jared were going as cowboys. Both were typical costumes that females fawn over.
“What about tomorrow night?” Maci noticed my hesitation to her original question. “Katie and I have a party on Saturday anyways. We can pregame here tomorrow and then all go out?”
I would have to devise an excuse for why I couldn’t go to Ohio State with Bryson, Jared, Connor, and a few guys from the football team. We’d been talking about it all week. I had to see if this thing with Maci was going anywhere. If we went out, I could see if we were better off as friends or if it was worth taking the risk of hooking up with her.
“I’ll be here.” I made it sound like I was cringing at the thought.
“Aww, I’m excited!” Maci smiled and got up to clean her bowl. “I can’t wait to see you drunk.” She laughed and wrapped her arms around my waist so she could hug me.
I felt my upper body relax. She turned back toward the living room, and I watched her walk away. Her black tank top hugged her waistline, and her running shorts were tight around her ass.
Even if I didn’t sleep with Maci, I could still guess what she hid underneath all her clothes.
Chapter7
Maci
October 2015
“God dammit!”I yelled at the steering wheel of my Hyundai Elantra. She usually never did me wrong, but I felt betrayed as I sat in the driver’s seat.
Okay, I regularly ignored the reminder sticker at the top left corner of my windshield. I winced at the evidence plastered right in front of me. My dashboard lit up in multiple places. With every blink, I felt more judgment radiate from the tiny little oil can light.
I was due for an oil change a whopping eight hundred miles ago.
While my angry car and I sat helplessly in Lot J, I tried calling Katie. It went straight to voicemail. Katie wouldn’t be done with class for another hour or so.
I stuck the key in the ignition and gave it another try. The engine revved, and I heard the effort my little car gave.
“Come on!” My begging turned into a nervous laugh when the engine picked up. My car sounded like it was going to fall apart, but I didn’t want to turn it off in case it didn’t start again. I quickly searched on my phone and found the nearest auto shop. Al’s Auto and Towing was only five miles away.
As I turned out of the parking lot, my phone vibrated in my cup holder. It was Jaxon.
I smiled and put him on speaker so I didn’t have to hold my phone. “Hello?”
“What’s up?” It was eerily quiet in the background wherever he was. I usually heard the gym, people in The Union, or nearby traffic whenever we were on the phone.
