But the more I talked to Wyatt and got to know him a little better, the more sense it made to me.
He wasn’t hung up on the money he had or the power he could wield. I was certain of that, even though he was guarded about his motives for everything at all times.
He cared about people and the rest of the world, no matter how much he tried to convince me otherwise.
Men who didn’t give a crap about people didn’t offer a shoulder to cry on to a woman who was confused and upset about her apartment getting broken into.
They also didn’t offer to open their home to give that woman a safe place to stay.
And they certainly didn’t risk their lives doing dangerous missions with special forces when they could be living an opulent life.
Wyatt might care from a distance, but hedidcare. He just didn’t show those emotions to the world.
I probably understood that inclination because I was once that wary and distrusting myself.
“Thanks,” I said gratefully as he handed me the glass of wine and then sat on the opposite end of the sofa.
Wyatt’s cell started to ring before I could say anything else, and he pulled it out of the pocket of his jeans with a frown. “Kaleb,” he said as he looked at his phone.
“I spoke to my family a little earlier about what happened. He’s probably still worried,” I said with a sigh.
I’d hesitated to tell my family about the break-in because I knew they’d be concerned. But in the end, there was really no other way for me to explain why I was staying with Wyatt, and that detail wasn’t something that he was going to hide from Kaleb.
Wyatt nodded as he answered. He put the phone on speaker and dropped the cell on the coffee table in front of us before he said gruffly. “Hey, Kaleb. What’s up? Shelby is here, too.”
I listened as Kaleb answered. “I just wanted to check in and see how things are going. Is everything okay? If Shelby needs me, I’m jumping on my jet. I can be there in a few hours.”
“I told you that everything was okay earlier,” I reminded Kaleb.
“Some asshole broke your bedroom window just to pocket your underwear, Shelby,” Kaleb said angrily. “This isn’t nothing, and it wasn’t just a burglary. If you don’t want me to come there, then come home. You’ll be safer here.”
“I’m not running away from my obligations here just because some jerk tried to intimidate me,” I said firmly.
“She’s perfectly safe here, Kaleb,” Wyatt said soberly. “I have a friend whose trying to dig up more information as we speak. And I have good security here. Better than yours.”
That was probably the truth since people in Crystal Fork rarely even locked their doors. My cousins weren’t stupid, and they all had basic security systems. But the environment in small town Montana was probably a lot safer for my cousins than it was for the Durands here in San Diego.
Not to mention the fact that my cousins went out of their way not to draw much public attention to themselves. The Durands worked in a higher profile industry.
“But she’d be further away from whoever did this,” Kaleb replied impatiently.
“Maybe,” Wyatt answered grimly. “But maybe not. If someone was bold enough to break into her house to steal her damn panties, does it really matter what location she’s in? They had to have known that she wasn’t home.”
“Are you saying someone is stalking her? Watching her every move. Shelby should be with her family right now, Wyatt,” Kaleb insisted irritably. “She’s alone there.”
“She’s not alone,” Wyatt argued. “She has me and a multitude of friends who care about what happens to her. She’ll stay here and have my security watching her when I’m not around. Shelby will never be unprotected. I promise you that, and you should know by now that I don’t break my word.”
I took a deep breath and let the testosterone fly.
Kaleb might not be here physically, but the male hormones buzzing around in the room were still getting pretty thick.
I was used to it.
I’d been raised with three male cousins who were all as stubborn as ornery mules, and they argued like this all the time.
They’d also tried to run my life most of the time, but had never succeeded.
I’d learned that it was only worth speaking up when things got totally out of hand. My cousins loved me, and they were worried, which was why Kaleb was blowing off steam with Wyatt right now. But in the end, I was going to do what was best for me, no matter what the bullheaded males in my family decided.
