Tori knew better than anyone that anything could happen to a woman alone, no matter how careful that female was about her safety.
“She was working in the soup kitchen this late?” I asked. “It’s after two.”
She’d started working at ten this morning at my house, and she was still working?
“The event she did tonight ran late,” Tori explained in a troubled tone. “She went to The Friendly Kitchen after the job. She’s home now, but someone broke into her apartment. She said everything is fine, and the police are there, but I don’t like it. I think Cooper and I should swing by there to make sure she’s okay. Maybe have her pack some things and stay with us. I think it would be safer until they figure out what happened.”
“She should never be walking by herself this late at night,” I said as I stood up, suddenly wider awake than I’d been a few minutes ago. “And it’s Friday night. Things get a little rowdier because people get extremely drunk on the weekends.”
Cooper strode into the room as I picked up Xena and put her leash on.
“Ready to go?” Cooper asked Tori.
“I’ve got this,” I told my sister. “You two go home and get some sleep. Text me Shelby’s number and address. I’ll make sure she’s safe.”
“It’s not far from here. It shouldn’t take you long to get there,” Tori commented as she started texting me the information. “Please text me, and bring her to our place if she needs a place to stay.”
Fuck!I hated that anxious expression on my little sister’s face.
“Where is Wyatt going?” Cooper asked curiously.
“Thank you, Wyatt,” Tori said with a yawn before she started to explain to Cooper where I was going.
I didn’t wait for Tori to finish explaining things to her husband.
I wanted to get to Shelby.
I had to see for myself that she was okay, and that she was in a safe environment.
Someone had breached her home, a place where she was supposed to be safe.
And what in the hell was she thinking when she’d walked home from The Friendly Kitchen?
She was a volunteer at the soup kitchen, and I was sure that no one expected her to be working there all alone this late at night.
I really hated the thought of her walking alone after dark through streets filled with drunken, idiotic males.
Or worse yet…down darkened streets where no one was around.
I’d seen the very worst of humanity, and I knew that anything could happen in any location when a woman made herself vulnerable.
Every muscle in my body was tense as I thought about Shelby walking downtown this late at night.
In the dark.
Alone and exposed.
Fuck!Maybe I shouldn’t give a damn, but I did, and my instincts were impossible to ignore right now.
“We’ll make sure everything is secure here,” Cooper called out from the meeting room. “Just go. Let me know if you need anything.”
Obviously, Tori had already told him where I was going and what had happened.
I let myself out of Last Hope headquarters without saying another word, more uptight than I’d been in a very long time.
Shelby Remington needed someone to watch her gorgeous ass, and since Kaleb wasn’t around to do it, I’d just decided that I was the guy who was going to make damn sure that she stayed safe.
