I had no idea why people thought that wealthy individuals wanted for nothing and that they wouldn’t be grateful for thoughtful gestures.

People were all the same, no matter how much money they had. Everyone appreciated a little kindness sometimes. For no reason at all.

“I wanted to make it for you,” I told him honestly as I crossed my arms over my chest. “Is that a problem for you?”

Shit!Maybe I’d made him uncomfortable. I was here for a purpose. I was getting paid for watching his dog. It was entirely possible that he didn’t want spontaneous gestures of gratitude from someone who worked for him.

I grabbed a glass, went to the fridge, and got him some ice water.

My actions were automatic. It had been my job to take care of people and their food for years now, and it was a hard habit to break, even when I wasn’t in a work environment.

As I put the glass down beside his plate, he reached out and snaked his fingers around my wrist firmly, but not tight enough to be painful. “Shelby?” he said in a gruff voice as he stopped eating and gazed at my face.

Without thinking about it, I met his eyes again because his voice was so damn compelling that I couldn’t stop myself.

“Yes?” I said breathlessly, my skin burning from his simple touch.

“I didn’t say I had a problem with it,” he clarified, his eyes blazing with a fierceness that I didn’t understand. “I just said that I wasn’t used to it.”

I nodded slowly, too captivated to answer.

He released me as he asked, “Are you planning on sitting your ass down to eat? I don’t expect you to serve me. I just asked for you to leave me the food.”

I blinked as I emerged from my lust-filled stupor.

Holy shit!I really hated the way this man affected me.

He was a bad-tempered, sexy, enigma that I really wanted to figure out, but I didn’t dare.

I shook my head. “I had something earlier, and it’s hard for me to stop serving people. It’s an ingrained instinct after working so long as a chef.”

“I’m willing to share that banana pudding,” he informed me.

For just a moment, I was tempted.

Really tempted.

I really wanted to get to know him better. I suspected that there was more to Wyatt Durand underneath his very guarded exterior. I wanted to put those puzzle pieces together, but I also knew getting to know the man beneath the mask was not going to be easy. I wasn’t sure I was up to the task because I was so ridiculously attracted to him.

He doesn’t really want me to stay.

I knew he was probably just trying to be nice because I’d done something extra for him.

Is Wyatt really the type of guy who would be polite?

Um…probably not, and if I couldn’t figure out his motivations, I definitely couldn’t stay.

“I have to run,” I said cheerily. “I volunteer at a soup kitchen and I need to prep some food tonight. Enjoy your dinner.”

I grabbed my stuff and hightailed it out of Wyatt’s kitchen so fast that he never had a chance to respond.

This is just a temporary job.

A mutually beneficial arrangement.

There were reasons why I didn’t date, and why I couldn’t even contemplate a relationship with any guy right now.

Not that I thought thathewas lusting afterme.
