“It’s only the four of us,” I tell her. “The fewer people who know, the better, and I don’t want anyone getting caught in the crosshairs.”
“Taking down anyone is hard. Taking down a corrupt politician is worse. Our grandfather has a lot of people in his back pocket, and he’s not an amateur. He has been in power for this long for a reason,” Dinah says.
“No one is invincible,” Evie argues.
Dinah nods. “That’s what I think too. So we need to help the FBI find his Achilles’ heel and hit him hard.”
“I don’t like the idea of you digging into this any further,” Evie protests. “What if he finds out you’re looking into him?”
“I can handle myself,” Dinah assures her with a small smile. “Don’t worry about me, sis.”
Evie scoffs. “Yeah, that’s not likely.”
“Cory will keep an eye on her,” I offer after a brief pause. “Right, cuz?”
Cory draws himself up to his full height and exhales. “Fine. If I have to babysit Her Royal Highness, I will.”
Evie closes the laptop and straightens her back. “Now we have to turn the evidence over to the FBI and hope it’s enough to take down the great Mitchel Coombes.”
I lace my fingers through hers and squeeze. “I like our odds.”
Evie gives me a quick smile. “Me too.”

Hours later, the four of us are standing outside a dark alley that overlooks Governors Coombes’ office building. Outside, there are several uniformed guards patrolling underneath the flickering streetlamps. Now and again whenever a car drives close to the building, we collectively held our breaths only to release them whenever it drove past.
The FBI is taking too long.
I tuck Evie into my side and am about to call it a night when I catch a flicker of movement. Then several cars with sirens surround the building. A few uniformed men and women pour out of the cars and brush past the security guards, who are held back by the police. Evie and her sister exchange a quick look and draw closer to each other.
A long moment passes where nothing happens.
Before long, Governor Coombes is being led out of the building in handcuffs, his mask one of carefully controlled fury. A few of his associates are led into separate cars right before a slew of media trucks show up. Then there are cameras and voices shouting to be heard over each other.
I take Evie’s hand in mine and lead her down the dimly lit alleyway. On the other side of the street, two motorcycles are parked next to the curb. Dinah and Cory are smiling at each other and exchanging heated looks. Evie gives her sister a quick hug and whispers something into her ear. Before Dinah takes off with Cory, the two sisters glance in my direction and grin.
As soon as my cousin turns into a speck on the horizon, I turn to Evie. “What was that about?”
“I was telling her to be careful because O’Connor men are very hard to resist.”
I drape an arm over her shoulders and press a kiss to the side of her head. “Is that so?”
Evie nods. “Oh, absolutely, but she said she liked her odds. I think she could be good for Cory, but she’s definitely out of his league.”
I chuckle. “No argument there. She’s a Coombes though, so she’ll make him work for it.”
Evie stares into the distance, a thoughtful expression on her face. “I hope so. So, what do you feel like doing now?”
I remove my arm, walk over to the motorcycle and hand her a helmet. “You mean after taking down your corrupt grandfather and setting up your sister and my cousin? Whatever you feel like doing.”
Evie takes the helmet and straps it around her chin. “I feel like getting something to eat, but before we do, there’s something I wanted to talk to you about.”
I lace my fingers through hers. “What is it?”
“I know that made you a deal with Isaiah to convince him to let me contact my family and my friends.”
I shrug.
