I huff a breathless laugh. “And to think I did all I could to get away from you when you saved me from Malek.”

“Why is that?”

I shrug. “Out of the frying pan into the fire, I guess. I didn’t know if you were another group who planned to fuck me up, you know?”

“Makes sense.”

“I hated that I was vulnerable too. I think my thirst for vengeance is stronger than my ability.”

“You don’t have to worry now, Tru.”

“Thanks.” I sit back against the couch, finally full. “You don’t eat much?”

“I ate earlier.”

I nod. “Cool.” I don’t know what it is, but things feel weird now. Different from earlier.

“How was your nap?” Midnight asks.

“Great. A little confusing.”

“What do you mean?”

“I don’t remember falling asleep. It’s like I lost a chunk of time.”

“You’re still healing, remember?” he offers.

“Right. Yeah.” I pick at my cuticles for a second. “I saw your music room.”

Midnight freezes, his eyes fixed on me. I can literally feel the tension coming off him.

“I didn’t touch anything. It’s nice. The piano looks very old.”

“It is.”

His response is clipped, and I get the distinct feeling I’ve overstepped again. “Well, um, thanks for dinner. I can Venmo you or something.”

“Venmo?”

“To pay you back.”

“Oh. That’s not necessary.”

“Cool. Well, thanks. I’m gonna get out of here. I should really show my face at home.”

Midnight’s jaw ticks as he says, “I would prefer you stayed.”

“Why, Midnight? I’m obviously in your way.”

“No, you’re not.” His voice softens as his features relax. “I’m just not used to having someone else around. I don’t want you to leave though.”

“Why?”

Midnight leans forward, resting his arms on his knees. “I can’t explain it, but…” His brow creases as his eyes search my face. “I feel better when you’re close.”

“Better how?” I ask, even as my insides are already turning to mush.

Midnight rises from the chair, crossing the space with his elegant gait and settling on the floor before me. He takes my hand in his, and the tiny gesture sends a shiver down my spine. As I gaze into his eyes, I’d swear the colors swirl.
