“Hand me your phone.”

I do so without question, as if Midnight is speaking to a part of me that can’t resist him. He punches his name and number into my phone, then shoots himself a text before handing it back to me.

“Don’t hesitate to use it if you need to.”

“Thanks.” My eyes shift to the ground again, but the body and the other man are gone. The question of how that happened without me noticing bounces around my brain, but Midnight’s fingers on my cheek pull my attention back to him.

“You have beautiful eyes,” Midnight murmurs, holding my gaze.

“So do you.”

His expression relaxes into a smile as he finally pulls his hand away, but the lack of his touch leaves me yearning.

“I should go,” I mumble.

“Take care, Tru.”

“You too.”

I walk away, glancing over my shoulder at him until I’m forced to turn a corner. Once I’m out of sight, I slump against a wall, my body deflating like it was being held together by some kind of force field. Midnight has a strange effect on me, but I don’t hate it. In fact, I think I want a little more.

But first I have to save my family from impending destruction.

ChapterFive

MIDNIGHT

“What did he say?” Eros asks, returning after disposing of our target.

“Nothing major. I used just a tiny bit of compulsion to soothe his concerns.”

“Smart.” Eros claps my back. “I’m surprised you didn’t throw him over your shoulder though.”

“What does that mean?” I ask, turning to face my brother.

Eros chuckles. “You didn’t sense your own emotions?” Dragging a hand through his long blond hair, he raises an eyebrow. “It was pouring off of you. You haven’t reacted like that to a mortal since…” His words trail off and he shrugs.

His message hits me like a brick to the chest. “I don’t understand it, Eros.”

Eros rubs my arm. “You really didn’t notice? Something happened. I don’t know what, exactly, but that little mortal’s presence has a striking effect on you. It was like the two of you were in a bubble, and the way he looked at you was…touching.”

My hand moves instinctively to my chest. I didn’t notice. “I thought I was being chill.”

Eros cackles at that. “Cute. For what it’s worth, I enjoyed it. Maybe it’s time to try again, Midnight. It’s been a very long time since you’ve allowed someone to touch your heart. Something about that particular man is different. You should explore it.”

“I don’t think I have a choice. He’s not afraid of me.”

“Promising. I ditched the body. Should we sniff around your mortal a bit more?”

“Should I?”

“Will you think of anything else tonight if we don’t?”

I growl at him, but Eros simply wraps his arm around my shoulders.

“Come on, grumpy,” he says, leading me through the dark streets of New Onyx.

As we walk, my mind swirls with thoughts, many of which make no sense.
