Then, I head up to Alexander’s office with sweaty palms, ready to apologize profusely until he can look at me without that angered expression.

With a nod, Freya tells me it’s okay to go into the office that reads Alexander Graves, CEO. Slowly, I pull at the doorknob and push the door open to see him standing before the large window that spans the entire space behind his desk and offers a stunning view of the bustling city below.

I shut the door gently behind me, but I can tell by the way he instantly becomes rigid that he can sense my presence. Before I can open my mouth to speak, he whirls around, and those gray eyes capture mine, causing a shiver of delight to run down my spine.

It doesn’t matter how many times I’ve told myself that I shouldn’t be attracted to him. After all, he’s my boss and father’s friend, several years older than me, and father to a sixteen-year-old teenage girl. No good will come out of it.

But even as I remind myself over and over of those things, I find that none of them matter whenever I’m in his presence. I let myself get lost in the glimmer of his eyes, the shape of his pursed lips, and the air of superiority around him. I almost go weak in the knees when those eyes rove across my body intently.

Before I can wonder if he finds me just as attractive as I do, Alexander clears his throat, bringing my thoughts back to more appropriate ones.

He points at his desk, and it is only then that I see the unmistakable plastic bag that the cafeteria hands out for people who want their food to go. The aroma of whatever delicacy is in there swirls through my nostrils, and my stomach grumbles in response.

Feeling my cheeks warm in embarrassment that he must have heard that sound, I duck my head in shame.

“Freya messed up my order, and since I doubt you’ve had time to eat with the ginormous amount of work on your desk, I assumed you haven’t had lunch.” I gape at the man before me, completely stunned at his gesture. “Go on,” he says. “Take it.”

I force my legs to move, and I grab the bag off his desk even as my hands shake a little. “Thank you, s… Alexander.”

His serene face turns into a scowl as he waves me off and then takes his seat behind his desk. “Now leave. I’ve got work to do.” He barks at me.

Quickly, I turn around and scurry out of his office. Thankfully, Freya is nowhere to be found, making it easy for me to leave without worrying about whatever rumors will arise from this.

When I peer into the bag, I smile, wondering how Freya messed up Alex’s order by getting all of my favorite food.

Chapter four

Something Unexpected-Alex

As each day passes, it’s becoming more and more difficult to pretend that Blair’s presence doesn’t have an effect on me. Especially not when I find reasons to call her up to my office or go to hers and spend several minutes staring at those blue eyes, focused with pure determination.

Just the other day, even as I yelled at her for taking on too much work, both hers and the one her colleagues had dumped on her, I couldn’t help but notice that she looked tired and with no food in sight.

Then, after storming off, my legs walked of their own accord to the cafeteria, and I had gotten her every single thing I noticed she preferred during lunch hours since she started working at the company.

I even had Freya bring every employee who had thought it a good idea to overwork my personal assistant to my office, placing them on probation with half their pay since they would prefer to shuck off their duties onto others.

Everything about Blair Osbourne intrigues me, and the more I try to remind myself that she’s off-limits, the more it seems impossible to ignore her.

Even now, before heading into the conference room where I’m supposed to have a meeting with my clients in a few minutes, I lean against the doorway and let my gaze roam the astonishing beauty already seated in one of the chairs and getting things ready.

I barely notice Freya’s presence until she stands before me, clearing her throat. “Freya…” I need to pull myself together.

My redheaded secretary smiles shyly and nods. “Everything is ready, Mr. Graves,” she says, waving a hand towards the long table now filled with refreshments and writing instruments for our arriving clients.

A sharp nod from me, and she walks out, leaving me alone with Blair, who is now on her feet and watching my every move. She seems more put together and vibrant than she was yesterday, and I’m glad to know that she took my advice.

I inch closer and closer to her, getting a whiff of that mouthwatering scent of hers. “You seem well prepared,” I tell her before taking my seat at the head of the table. “That’s good.”

Blair takes her seat by my left and smiles hesitantly. Then, she wrings her fingers together on the table nervously. “I never got to apologize for my shortcomings the past few weeks, and…” she swallows before continuing. “I wanted to thank you for giving me another chance.”

Something flutters in my chest at her soft-spoken words, and I wonder if she knows the kind of effect she has on me.

I don’t give people second chances, ever. Even when Tianna had pleaded with me on both knees after I caught her and her boyfriend in our matrimonial bed, begging me to consider our daughter, I refused.

Yet, despite the many mistakes Blair has made in the past weeks, I have found myself making concessions on her behalf. It occurs to me then that maybe I shouldn’t have. If the fast beating of my heart is any indication to go by, maybe I should have let Blair go the moment she made the first mistake. Then, I won’t be dealing with this pesky attraction for her.

“You’re welcome…” I trail off when I notice the sketching in the notepad in front of her. She seems to notice my gaze because her cheeks instantly go red as she tries to hide the notepad from me. “You draw?” I ask, stunned and somewhat excited to learn something else about her.
