Alexander sighs, looking more exhausted than I’ve ever seen him. “Tianna, this is Blair, my personal assistant.”

I try not to let it show that his way of introducing me hurts as I swallow, lowering my gaze. “Again, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to intrude. I should go.”

I start to turn around when Tianna snorts loudly. “You have no shame, Alexander Graves. Now you’re messing around with your assistant with our daughter in the same house?”

I abruptly turn around, my hands curling into fists as anger rises within me. “I beg your pardon?” I say, just at the same time, Alex bellows Tianna’s name.

His ex-wife's gaze darts towards me, her eyes narrowing with venomous intensity. Her anger is palpable, a weapon she wields with precision. She approaches me, invading my personal space, her voice dripping with malice. "You think you can just waltz into his life, sleep in his bed?" she seethes, her words slicing through the air like daggers. "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into, you little slut."

“Tianna, that is enough. You do not speak to her that way. Do you understand me?” Alex comes to stand between us. I don’t think I’ve ever seen him this enraged before, not even when I messed up his correspondence and he fired me.

But I refuse to hide behind him like a weakling. I stand my ground, the adrenaline coursing through me, empowering me to face this threat head-on. "I don't need your permission to be in his life," I retort, my voice steady, despite the turmoil within. "We have our own connection, and it's none of your business."

Her eyes bore into mine, searching for weakness, for a sign of retreat. But I refuse to back down. I've come too far to be intimidated by her or anyone else’s manipulative tactics. With every word I speak, I assert my autonomy.

“Unbelievable,” Tianna says. “I bet he told you that you’re special, and he probably promised you a future or even a life with him. Well, news flash, lady, he says that to a lot of girls, especially ones your age. People like you are usually his type,” she smirks.

My stomach plummets, but I refuse to let her see how much her words affect me. “He didn’t tell me any of those things, and he didn’t have to. But it’s clear to me now that he dodged a bullet with you.”

“How dare you?!” she screeches and takes a step forward. “You’ll pay for what you just said. I’ll gladly ruin your pathetic life for crossing me.”

Alex quickly steps between us, a wall of protection and understanding. His voice carries a sternness as he addresses his ex-wife, drawing a clear boundary. "You have no right to threaten her or dictate my life," he says firmly, his eyes unwavering. "Our relationship is in the past, and what Blair and I do is none of your business."

A flicker of realization crosses her face, a realization that her attempts to control and manipulate have failed. The room grows quiet, the weight of the truth sinking in. It is a defining moment, a turning point in this intricate web of emotions.

Alex’s voice, steady and resolute, cuts through the heavy silence. "It's time for you to leave," he states firmly, his gaze fixed on his ex-wife. His words are laced with a mix of determination and weariness, a testament to the strength he's mustered to protect the life he's built.

She recoils slightly, her eyes filled with a mixture of defiance and resignation. It's clear that she's grappling with the reality of the situation, the realization that the hold she once had on him is slipping away. Yet, a spark of defiance remains a final attempt to assert her dominance.

"You can't just push me out of your life," she retorts, her voice filled with bitterness. "We have a history, a connection that can't be erased. I’m the mother of your child, and I’m here to see my daughter."

He meets her gaze, unwavering in his resolve. "Our connection is in the past, and if you want to see Summer, you can come back at a more appropriate time. After all, Summer is in bed right now." he declares, his voice unwavering.

Tianna stands there, her face a mosaic of emotions, the battles within her raging on. And as I observe, I can't help but feel a surge of empathy for the woman who once held a significant place in his life. But I also recognize the importance of drawing boundaries.

With a sigh, she concedes defeat, the weight of reality settling upon her shoulders. She glances at me, a mixture of resentment and resignation in her eyes, before turning to leave. I felt a twinge of sympathy for the pain she must be enduring, even though I don’t condone the way she spoke to Alex and me.

As the door closes behind her, a sense of calm washes over the room, like a breath of fresh air after a storm. “Alex, I’m sorry about that. I didn’t mean to…”

“You have nothing to be sorry about,” he cuts in sharply. “You did nothing wrong.”

I look at him, really look at him and see the pain he’s battling. And I wish I could make him feel better, so I do the only thing I can. I step forward and wrap my arms around him, smiling when he surrenders into the hug.

Chapter eighteen

Damage Control-Alex

I stand in the middle of my living room, the remnants of the unpleasant encounter with Tianna lingering in the air. My heart still pounds in my chest as I watch the closed door, shutting out the chaos that was my ex-wife.

The weight of her behavior presses heavily on my conscience, knowing that I need to make amends to the one person who deserves my apology more than anyone else, Blair. The fact that she’s even hugging me right now, despite me exposing her to Tianna’s brutality, says a lot about the kind of person she is.

Blair pulls away after a while and stands a few feet away from me, her eyes reflecting a mix of concern and hurt. Her usually radiant face is clouded with the remnants of tears she must have refrained from shedding during the ordeal.

I take a deep breath, mustering the courage to address the damage caused by my ex's intrusion. This moment is crucial, and I can't afford to let my past mistakes jeopardize the connection I've found with Blair.

"Blair," I begin, my voice trembling slightly. "I'm so sorry. I never expected her to behave that way, and I certainly didn't anticipate the extent of her actions. You didn't deserve any of this."

She meets my gaze, her eyes searching mine for sincerity. Her vulnerability makes me acutely aware of the gravity of my words. I take a step toward her, closing the physical distance between us, hoping it mirrors the emotional bridge I'm trying to build.
